Trenčín: Discover Castles, a Cycle Route and Caves

Trenčín combines an impressive castle history with cycle paths, caves, water activities and unusual insights into crafts and industry. Castles and Historical Insights

Trenčín Castle was built in the 11th century as a border fortress. Its purpose was to guard important fords across the Váh and important Carpathian passes. The castle barracks now house an exhibition of medieval and modern firearms. This adds a concrete insight into the development of weapons to the site’s historical significance.

The ruins of Vršatec Castle offer a different kind of castle visit. They are located in the Vršatské hradné bralo National Nature Reserve and are freely accessible to the public. An educational trail connects Vršatské Podhradie and Červený Kameň. The Váh Cycle Route is one of the oldest and longest cycle routes in Slovakia. It passes through the Nitra, Trnava, Trenčín and Žilina regions. A shorter option within the range of activities is the Trenčín Circuit: The route is a straightforward one-way ride on paved paths and is also suitable for recreational cyclists. The starting point is at the municipal swimming pool in Trenčín, where you can park directly along the route.

Boating, sailing and fishing are possible at the Nosice Reservoir. The surrounding area is accompanied by the developed Váh Cycle Route, allowing water attractions to be combined with cycling activities. This creates a clear distinction between an excursion with a historical focus and a day centred on exercise and water.

Caves, Glass and Mining

Pružinská Dúpna Cave is one of the oldest caves in Slovakia and is believed to have formed around 10 million years ago. An educational trail from the village of Priedhorie leads to the cave. Visits are possible from 1 May to 31 October by prior arrangement with the speleologists. This arrangement clearly distinguishes a cave visit from the freely accessible ruins of Vršatec Castle: here, making prior arrangements is explicitly part of planning the visit.

The Sklený sen open-air glassmaking museum introduces visitors to traditional glassmaking. Sklený sen offers guided excursions for families and individuals; glass products can then be purchased. Králik’s Mill is over 200 years old and preserves its original milling machinery and equipment.

The Uhoľná expozícia Handlová presents the history of lignite mining in Slovakia, focusing on industrial extraction in the 20th century. The basement recreates underground spaces and shows coal extraction from manual methods to mechanised mining at the beginning of the 20th century. The exhibition also covers mine ventilation, the pumping of mine water, lighting and the development of mine rescue services.
