Nitrianske Rudno: Reservoir, Nature Trail and Regional Culture

Nitrianske Rudno combines a reservoir shaped by history with forest paths, rock formations and regional culture. The place is suitable for travelers who do not want to view nature experiences in isolation, but also seek the stories, customs and historical traces of a landscape. The Nitrianske Rudno locality page provides additional information about the place of the same name.

Reservoir between water management and nature experiences

The Nitrianske Rudno reservoir was built between 1951 and 1958 on the Nitrica River. Originally, it served to supply water to the Nováky thermal power plant and chemical works. Today, the reservoir covers 89.7 hectares and has a total volume of 4.410 million cubic meters.

During the summer months, the reservoir offers opportunities for swimming and water sports. Cultural events, concerts and auto-moto gatherings are also held there. During the fishing seasons, the body of water is used by sport anglers. This means that different forms of use exist side by side, without reducing the reservoir to a single recreational function.

A nature trail at the reservoir provides information about the local flora and fauna as well as important habitats in the Strážov Mountains and in protected Natura 2000 areas. Those who want to experience the landscape not only through its water surface can gain an introduction to its natural features there.

The Fraňa-Madva Nature Trail and paths through the valley

The Fraňa-Madva Nature Trail begins in Nitrianske Rudno and ends in Nitrianske Sučany. It passes through beech, pine and oak forests, across meadows and to rock formations offering views of the Rudnianska Valley. In addition to Brložná Cave, the route includes a short ascent secured with chains.

A distinct connection to Fraňa Madva is reflected in the traditional Fraňa-Madva March. In 2026, it was held for the 29th time, ran from the area of Madvova studnička to Nitrianske Sučany and was 11.7 kilometers long. Fraňa Madva studied botany and collected and researched medicinal plants; he was widely sought after as a folk healer.

Church, monument and living heritage

The historical landmarks include the Roman Catholic Church of Saint Andrej-Svorad and Benedict. It was built between 1804 and 1816 on the site of a wooden church that had been destroyed by fire. A Lourdes grotto is located on the church grounds south of the entrance. The Fraňa-Madva Monument, erected in 1925, also stands there.

Horný kaštieľ, also called Javorčekeje dom, is considered the oldest house in Nitrianske Rudno. The place is also associated with a mining tradition. Folk customs, traditions and traditional crafts are preserved through various events. Regional culture also includes musical forms: DĽH spod Rokoša performs songs from Upper Nitra and focuses particularly on the Rudnianska Valley. The Rokôška Folklore Ensemble has maintained its folklore work since 1986 and regularly performs at folklore events in the region and beyond.

Events as part of the local character

Motocross races for the Mayor’s Cup were held at the Kaňová grounds in 2024 and 2026. Such events take place alongside the summer activities at the reservoir and traditional cultural events. For understanding the region, they are relevant above all as concrete examples of the range between landscape, customs and motorsport-oriented events.
