Považská Bystrica District: Gorges, Castle Ruins and the Javorníky Mountains

Považská Bystrica District combines striking gorges, historic sites, landscapes of the Javorníky Mountains and specific opportunities for cycling and cultural interests. If you are looking for a district with a variety of experiences for your trip to Slovakia, you will find both unusually narrow rocky passages and castle ruins, museums, sacred sites and traditional architecture here.

Gorges, Caves and Protected Nature

Manínska tiesňava is less than one kilometre long. At its narrowest point, it narrows to 3.7 metres, creating a particularly concentrated impression of the rocky landscape. Kostolecká tiesňava is a limestone gorge about 500 metres long. It was formed by the epigenetic incision of the Manínsky potok stream into the Drieňovka limestone rocks. In the same gorge, climbing practice routes range from 20 to 200 metres in length.

Caves are also part of the district’s natural profile. Pružinská-Dúpna Cave is considered the best-known cave in the surroundings of Pružina. Mojtínska jaskyňa is located in Mojtín in Považská Bystrica District within the Strážovské vrchy and is freely accessible to the public. In the Veľký Javorník National Nature Reserve, remnants of the original fir-beech primeval forest and rare Carpathian flora are protected.

Castle Ruins and Historic Sites

The ruins of Považský Castle date from the 13th century; the castle was first mentioned in writing in 1316. From Považské Podhradie, the ruins can be reached via a yellow-marked hiking trail. Since 2012, there has also been an educational trail with four information panels. The ruins offer views of the Váh Valley.

Považské Podhradie is also home to a small Renaissance manor house. The single-storey building has several turrets and is embedded in the slope of the castle hill. The manor house known as the “castle” was reconstructed in 2012. Horná Mariková is home to one of the most intact ensembles of typical traditional folk architecture of the kopaničar settlements in the Javorníky region. In Papradno, the Church of St Andrew is designated as a national cultural monument.

The Calvary of Považská Bystrica lies on a steep hill east of the town. It comprises twelve small masonry Stations of the Cross and the Chapel of St Mary Magdalene. The site has resumed its original sacred purpose and is also a well-maintained resting place in natural surroundings. The Považská Bystrica Town Museum presents the historical and cultural heritage of the town and region through authentic collections, exhibitions and themed events. The Vlastivedné múzeum has natural science collections in geology, botany and zoology, as well as social science holdings on archaeology, history and ethnology.

Cycling Routes, Viewpoints and Regional Traditions

The blue-marked Vážska cyklomagistrála Udiča–Považie is 46 kilometres long. It runs through the Maríková valleys and through Papradno, Brvnište, Stupné and Jasenica. Another cycling tour between Považský Castle and Manínska tiesňava begins at Považská Bystrica railway station; there is also a car park there.

If you prefer a route through a natural landscape, the route from Považská Bystrica to Domaniža leads uphill through Briestenné to the area above Čelkova Lehota. In good visibility, the summit offers long-distance views as far as Kľak. The observation tower on Stratene is freely accessible year-round as part of the ridge route through the Javorníky Mountains and can be reached, among other ways, from the Papradno-Podjavorník settlement.

The Bačova cesta offers another regional perspective. It connects the sheep farms in Papradno and Pružina. At its annual opening in May, visitors can learn more about sheep keeping and sheep breeding and taste Slovak dairy products.
