Discover Záskalie: Gorges, Trails and Nature

Záskalie lies in a basin of the Strážov Mountains and was first mentioned in 1379. Today, the area is known primarily for the landscape of Manínska tiesňava, marked trails and the surrounding gorges. If you would like to combine nature, shorter and longer hiking destinations, and traces of cultural history during your trip to Slovakia, you will find several different points of interest here.

Gorges, Rocks and Protected Nature

Tourists visit Záskalie because of Manínska tiesňava, a national nature reserve with bizarre natural rock formations. The gorge is a narrow valley of the Manínsky potok stream, enclosed by rock walls up to 400 metres high. The approximately 500-metre-long Kostolecká tiesňava rock gorge is also located nearby. It was formed by the epigenetic incision of the Manínsky potok stream into the limestone rocks of Drieňovka.

An educational trail leads through the gorges. The educational trail through Manínska tiesňava continues to Kostolecká tiesňava, whose features include the largest rock overhang in Slovakia. The rock overhang known as “Strecha Slovenska” is located at the summit of the Triangle. Rare and strictly protected species found around Záskalie include the Slovak pasque flower and the Apollo butterfly. The natural experiences therefore range from striking rock formations to individual protected plant and animal species.

Hiking Trails with Different Destinations

There are marked hiking trails in and around the municipality of Záskalie, as well as an educational trail with a possible connection as far as the Súľovské skaly. One clearly identified option is hiking route 5585: it leads from Záskalie to Pod Veľkým Manínom and is 2.1 kilometres long.

Starting points and markings are also described for other hiking destinations. Partizánska jaskyňa is up to 21 metres long and can be reached from Záskalie via a green-marked trail through the forest. The marked ascent to Veľký Manín begins in Záskalie. At first, a green-marked route continues, later connecting to a yellow-marked route. The documented trails therefore differ both in their destinations and in the sequence of their markings.

A local green-marked route connects Záskalie with Považská Bystrica. Most of the green route between Záskalie and Považská Bystrica runs through the Strážovské vrchy Protected Landscape Area. It is also important for getting there that Záskalie can be reached by public buses. Timetables or current operating hours are not described; what is recorded is the basic accessibility by public bus.

A Distinctive Cultural-Historical Feature

The history of the village dates back to its first mention in 1379. A special local connection with nature is reflected in the historic municipal symbol from the 18th century: it depicts a snipe. No other municipality in Slovakia uses the snipe as a symbol. Together with the gorges, rock overhangs and protected species, this creates a character for the village in which cultural history and landscape stand closely side by side.
