Pružina: Caves, Waterfalls and Local Culture
Pružina combines experiences in nature with a distinctive cultural side. When planning your trip, you can choose between different focuses: explore Pružinská Dúpna Cave, plan a hike to the Strážov Waterfalls, or visit the Church of St. Žofia, the Calvary and the museum exhibition. Walks in the surrounding area are another option for a stay in Pružina.
One particularly tangible destination is Pružinská Dúpna Cave. Its main passage is open to the public and is more than 300 metres long. Access leads from the Pružina-Priedhorie district via the Karol Brančík educational trail. If you would like to learn about the cave with expert guidance, a tour can be arranged with the chairman of the Strážovské vrchy Speleology Club. This allows you to treat the visit as a distinct nature and discovery highlight of your trip.
Cave Landscapes and Waterfalls
Pružinská Dúpna Cave was formed by the long-term erosion of Mesozoic limestone by underground water. Bats mainly use it as a wintering site. This combination of geological formation and wildlife makes the cave interesting for travellers who want to experience landscapes beyond the surface.
For a longer activity in nature, Pružina can serve as a starting point for hikes to the Strážov Waterfalls. These take around 3.5 hours. Near the Sedlo pod Strážovom saddle, leave the yellow-marked hiking trail for the turn-off to the waterfalls. The Strážovský Stream rises in the area around Pružina and, after 100 metres, flows over rocky steps to form two waterfalls: the Upper and Lower Waterfalls. This gives you the choice between a cave visit and a more extensive hike as different ways to spend the day.
Church, Calvary and Commemorative Culture
The Calvary of Pružina lies in the village centre on a gentle hill in the grounds of the parish Church of St. Žofia. Originally, it consisted of 11 stations with 18 representations. It includes seven paintings by J. B. Klemens from 1863 and four paintings by K. Švestka from 1880. The Church of St. Žofia was originally Gothic and was extended with a presbytery in 1759. Those interested in sacred art and regional history will find several traces from different periods in one place.
The museum exhibition in Pružina also includes a memorial room. Together with the Calvary and the church, it offers a cultural perspective on Pružina that differs from the natural experiences of the cave and waterfalls. Fašiangy in Pružina are also associated with a traditional household pig slaughter and provide a further insight into the local character of the village.
