Discover Horna Marikova: Culture, Trails and Winter Sports

Horná Mariková combines vibrant folk culture with trails through the Javorníky landscape. The history of the village is particularly vividly presented in the Modlatín district, where an open-air museum features an exhibition on traditional living in the Mariková Valley. The exhibition is housed in a three-part wooden house. This cultural focus is complemented by historic churches, preserved log houses, folklore, and specific opportunities for hiking, cycling and winter sports.

Culture between wooden house and church

The exhibition at the Modlatín open-air museum is free to visit by prior arrangement with the responsible member of staff at the Horná Mariková municipal office. By arrangement, a guided tour with an ethnologist from the local history museum in Považská Bystrica can also be organized. This makes it possible to learn about traditional living in the valley not only through a building, but also with expert context. The Roman Catholic Church of St. John of Nepomuk is also located in the Modlatín district. Its original structure dates from 1765. In 1925–1926, it was extended with a new part of the nave and a side annex. Ráztoka is also home to a wooden church, considered the only wooden church in the district, which was built in 1948–1949. Local culture also includes the Žrnovanka folklore ensemble and the Marikovské folklórne slávnosti, which have been held in Horná Mariková since 1991. The settlements also preserve original log houses. Some of these buildings are gradually being converted into holiday cottages and holiday homes. In this way, traditional architecture remains visible not only as a museum subject but also continues to shape the settlement structure. Views and marked trails

A prominent landscape feature is Orgoňova Kyčera. The viewing platform of the observation tower there is located seven metres above the ground. From the top, views extend among other places to Manínska tiesňava, the Súľovské skaly, Žilina and the Low Tatras. Orgoňova Kyčera can be reached from the centre of Horná Mariková via two described routes: directly from the renovated “Rezort Mravec” hotel or through the Modlatín Valley and the Máčkovci settlement. The viewpoint lies on a blue-marked hiking trail that leads from the main ridge of the Javorníky via the elevation of Malý Javorník towards Považská Bystrica. The municipality’s cadastral area also contains the Javorníky–Družba educational trail, which focuses on natural history and local history. The Marikovský potok, also known as Marikovka, flows through Horná Mariková and is one of the named landscape features of the village.

Short cycling routes and winter sports

Two easy recreational routes are designated for cycling. Cycling route 8316 from Horná Mariková to Máčkovci is 1.8 kilometres long, designed for recreational mountain biking, and runs over asphalt and paved paths. It starts near the retirement home at a junction with the blue cycling route 2307. The Horná Mariková–Bahno route, also 1.8 kilometres long, is easy and paved; it too starts at a junction with the blue cycling route 2307. In winter, the SKI Ráztoka ski resort offers three lifts with lengths of 1,000, 720 and 250 metres. Ski mountaineering is also possible on the Čertov–Horná Mariková–Portáš route.
