Stupné – Cycling Routes, Valley Landscape and Culture

Stupné lies between Jasenica and Brvnište in the Papradnianska Valley. The village combines a clearly defined landscape with cycling routes, historical traces and regional culture. To the north, the Papradnianska Valley near Stupné is bordered by the Javorníky Mountains. Scattered traditional log-house architecture in the Kopanici area complements this landscape and gives the valley a distinctive character beyond its individual sights.

Cycling Routes through the Papradnianska Valley

Two different routes are documented for navigating the area by bicycle. The Vážska cyklomagistrála Udiča–Považie is 46 kilometres long and marked in blue. It passes through Stupné, running via Papradno, Brvnište and Jasenica. Another cycling route is 35 kilometres long, marked in blue and yellow, and leads from Považská Bystrica via Jasenica, Stupné, Brvnište and Papradno.

History, Chapel and Local Culture

Stupné was first mentioned in writing in 1416. The settlement from which Stupné developed moved from the area known as “Spád” to a more spacious location in the valley; this move is associated with the name Stupné. A visible religious landmark is the chapel in Stupné, dedicated to the Seven Sorrows of Mary and built between 1980 and 1982. It contains a wooden statue of the Seven Sorrows of Mary dating from 1805, which is designated as a cultural monument.

The local theatre history is also part of the village’s cultural profile. The amateur theatre tradition in Stupné began in 1935 under the direction of Ondrej Balej. Under the same direction, the amateur theatre rehearsed the comedy “Strašidlo”. The Ivana-Piško Theatre performed three times at Scénická žatva in Martin. Two bells hang in the bell tower of Stupné: the larger one is dedicated to Saint Cyril and the smaller one to Saint Methodius.

Žeravica and Routes with Cultural Connections

A Stations of the Cross route leads from Stupné to the summit of Žeravica. The summit features an artificial terrace and a simple earthen fortification. From the north, the summit terrace is relatively easy to reach along a ridge. The Žeravica area is also characterised by the occurrence of rare plants and animals. The Stations of the Cross on Calvary in Stupné comprise fourteen stations made of wood and metal; three large wooden crosses stand at the final station.

A rest area for tourists was built in the Potoky district. Another notable place is the natural amphitheatre in Stupné, which is used mainly for the Hodový jarmok and other local cultural events. For the Feast of the Epiphany, or Three Kings’ Day, support was also provided for organising an annual ascent by local residents to Holý vrch.

Hodový jarmok and Special Dates

The Stupniansky hodový jarmok took place in the municipality of Stupné and was announced as its 22nd edition. The festival features traditional handicrafts and homemade cuisine. At the 2025 Stupniansky hodový jarmok, visitors could also view a representation of the traditional form of housing in Stupné. The Stupniansky Hodový Jarmok is announced for 13 September 2026 in Stupné.
