Trenčín District: Castle, Spa Town and Nature

Trenčín District combines a distinctive urban history with forest landscapes, religious buildings, spa culture and active experiences. Castle, Urban History and Museums

Trenčín Castle is a landmark of the city of Trenčín and the entire Považie region and is one of the most extensive castles in Europe. Its history dates back to a residential tower and a rotunda from the 11th century; the remains are visible in the upper castle courtyard. The castle can be reached from the city centre by tourist train, making a visit easy to combine with exploring the city.

The Trenčianske múzeum is aimed at visitors who want to explore history not only through a single building. Its collections include archaeology, history, ethnography, art history, numismatics, geology, botany and zoology. At Katov dom, exhibitions present the town executioner, the guild system in Trenčín and the surrounding area, as well as the homes and everyday lives of citizens from after 1850 through the interwar period. The building is the only largely unaltered Renaissance burgher house of its kind preserved in Trenčín.

A Roman inscription on the castle rock commemorates the Romans’ victory over the Germanic Quadi. It can be viewed through a glass wall in Hotel Elizabeth; the route leads upward through the entrance hall. The Piarist Church of St Francis Xavier also makes a distinctive cultural contribution: it is one of Slovakia’s important sacred Baroque monuments and has an illusionistic dome painting above the nave.

Forest, Views and Activity

Brezina Forest Park is a south-western extension of the Strážovské vrchy mountains and reaches into the urban area of Trenčín. There are separate and shared paths for walking, running and cycling. Inovec marks another notable landscape feature: at 1,042 metres, it is the highest peak of the Považský Inovec mountain range. Dúbravka Lookout Tower can be reached from the cemetery in Soblahov in about ten minutes on foot.

A variety of other options are available for active excursions. Tarzania in Trenčín has 22 elevated platforms and various rope obstacles at heights of 5 to 10 metres. The courses are marked blue, red and black; there is also a separate children’s course with obstacles positioned at a lower height. The TTS Trenčín canoe club allows visitors to rent sports and tourist equipment for activities on the water.

Spa Town, Art and Regional Highlights

Trenčianske Teplice adds a distinct spa-town dimension to the selection. The Hammam was built in 1888 in an Oriental-Moorish style and is considered a European rarity. The historic connection between the two places can be experienced with TREŽ, a 115-year-old narrow-gauge railway from Trenčianska Teplá to the spa town of Trenčianske Teplice. TREŽ offers irregular tourist trips, lectures and cultural events.

In Trenčín, the Galéria Miloša Alexandra Bazovského presents a cross-section of the Slovak modernist work of Miloš Alexander Bazovský in a permanent exhibition, including landscapes, still lifes and figurative compositions. Guided exhibition tours, specialist lectures and creative workshops are also offered. The Župný dom is one of Trenčín’s most important historic buildings. Following restoration from 2025 to 2026, it offers exhibition and gallery spaces for exhibitions, small concerts and literary evenings.

Trenčín’s present-day synagogue also reflects several phases of construction: it stands on the site of a wooden synagogue built in 1781 and is a modern reinforced-concrete building with Byzantine and Moorish-Oriental elements, designed by Richard Scheibner and Hugo Pál. The Parish Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is one of the oldest and most important religious buildings in Trenčín. Skalka is considered the oldest pilgrimage site in Slovakia.

Experiences Outside the City Centre

Gazdovstvo Uhliská in Nemšová offers horse riding and hippotherapy. Sheep and goat milking, as well as cheese-making, are also demonstrated or offered there. The range therefore extends from urban history and fine art to regional agriculture and outdoor activities.
