Svinná: Church, Local History and Fašiangy
Accommodation in Svinná
Svinná combines a long local history with sacred architecture, traditional carnival customs and a location along the upper reaches of the Svinnica stream. If, during your trip to Slovakia, you would like to explore cultural traces not in isolation but together with the landscape and the region’s everyday history, the village offers several clearly distinct points of interest.
Church and Sacred Details
The church in Svinná was consecrated on November 11, 1923, by Bishop Dr. Karol Kmeťko. Its architecture is classified as Art Nouveau with Neo-Gothic elements. The church contains a Pietà statue from the mid-17th century at the altar of the Holy Sepulchre. The work is protected by the heritage conservation authority. The combination of a 20th-century building and a considerably older statue makes the church a place where different historical layers directly meet.
Another documented point of interest is the chapel in Malá Neporadzka. Its bell was cast in 1919 at the workshop of Pavel Ranko in Trenčín and bears the name “sv. Mária”. This example therefore makes it possible to trace not only a sacred object but also its craft origin, preserved together with the maker’s name.
From Early References to Today’s Place Name
The origins of Svinná are dated to the years 1171 to 1180. The existence of the village in 1208 is assumed indirectly: a boundary description of Dobrašov mentions the municipality as “Suina”. The first direct written reference dates from 1439, where the name “Possessio seu villa ZWYNNA” appears. This sequence is important for the historical classification because it distinguishes between an indirect assumption, an earlier mention of the name and the later direct written reference.
Fašiangy with a Parade and “pochovávanie basy”
Fašiangy in Svinná lasts two days. On Saturday, a parade of carnival masks makes its way through the village; on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, the “pochovávanie basy” ceremony follows. Local firefighters have been involved in organizing Fašiangy practically since their foundation in 1884. This combination of a masked parade, designated days and local involvement describes the tradition more precisely than a general reference to carnival.
The carnival-mask parade covers approximately 11 kilometers. This distance corresponds to the total length of all the village’s roads.
Location, Water and Railway Connections
The Svinica reservoir is located in the vicinity of Svinná. Sport fishing and water sports are possible there. Svinná also has a railway station on the Trenčín–Chynorany railway line. Thus, both a named connection to the regional railway network and water-based activities in the nearby area are documented aspects of the village.
