This gives the city a variety of travel experiences: you can explore historic buildings and exhibitions, hike through Brezina Forest Park or choose cycling routes with different types of paths. A trip on the Dominik also adds views of Trenčín and the surrounding area to the cityscape.
Trenčín Castle and Evidence of the City’s History
Trenčín Castle is a national cultural monument on a steep rock. Together with Spiš and Devín castles, it is one of the largest castles in Europe. Its history dates back to the 11th century: at that time, the castle was a royal castle, later developed into an important border fortress and subsequently became the seat of the county.
The castle contains exhibition rooms and numerous exhibitions of the Trenčín Museum. The rock is also home to an important epigraphic memorial dating from the end of the later Roman imperial period. The victory inscription preserved there commemorates a military victory. Thus, at the same historic site, you encounter different periods, from the Roman imperial era to the medieval and later use of the castle.
Another visible testimony to the city’s history is the town tower. A remnant of a gate from the original medieval town fortifications has been preserved there. The ascent involves 54 steps. Trenčín Synagogue provides a different architectural accent; it was built in 1913 based on a design by Berlin architect Richard Scheibner. The historicist modern reinforced-concrete building combines Byzantine and Moorish-Oriental elements. Inside, the original blue dome with an elaborately designed chandelier and colored windows with ornamental and floral motifs have been preserved.
Brezina Forest Park: Paths, Educational Trails and DIVO Trails
Brezina Forest Park is a southwestern extension of the Strážovské vrchy mountains and stretches into the urban area of Trenčín. Its paths and routes are aimed at walkers, runners and cyclists. There are sections reserved exclusively for pedestrians, used exclusively by cyclists or shared by both. This clear distinction makes the forest park interesting for different forms of activity without equating the types of paths.
The DIVO Trails are available for mountain bikes. They are narrow forest paths with varying levels of difficulty. Those who prefer to travel on foot will find several themed points of interest in Brezina. The educational trail Forest Origin and Development is 1,500 meters long and includes 12 information panels. It can be accessed from the JUH residential area or from Hotel Veverica. The North educational trail is 1,410 meters long and has seven stations. They cover the history of Brezina, the soils and the plant species growing there.
A longer option is the Titanitka hike. It begins at Železák, is 7 km long and takes approximately three hours. This time indication is expressly only an estimate. The forest park also has nine official fire pits that visitors can use freely.
Another Perspective from the Water
The trip on the Dominik is designed as a nautical activity. It includes taking photographs with a real steering wheel, measuring the water depth using a method from the era of Mississippi paddle steamers and learning various sailor’s knots. Together with the views of Trenčín and the surrounding area, this creates a different perspective on the city than visiting the castle, town tower or synagogue.
