Trenčianska Teplá – Culture, Cycling Routes and TREŽ

Trenčianska Teplá combines a landscape at the transition between basin and mountains with regional culture, cycling routes and a distinctive railway connection. The town lies in the southeast of the Ilava Basin at the foothills of the Strážovské vrchy. Here, the Teplička stream emerges from the mountains, flows through Trenčianska Teplá and then empties into the Váh. For travel planning, landscape, activity and historical landmarks therefore come together in a compact area, without the town being reduced to just one theme.

Landscape, Railway and Routes

A special feature of local transport is TREŽ: the electrically operated narrow-gauge railway connects the Trenčianska Teplá railway junction with the spa town of Trenčianske Teplice. TREŽ also offers irregular tourist passenger services as well as lectures and cultural events. Alongside conventional rail transport, this places an independent cultural aspect in the foreground. The connection can be regarded as a distinctive element of regional mobility, while the Teplička river landscape forms the natural setting of the town.

Several differently described cycling options are documented. The blue cycling route 2303 begins in the market square of Trenčianska Teplá. It is 11.3 kilometres long, classified as an easy recreational cycling route for road traffic, and runs on asphalt or a paved surface. Those looking for a regional connection can also take the Trenčianska Teplá–Bolešov cycling route, which connects Trenčianska Teplá with the Váh cycling route. A green cycling route reaches the centre of Trenčianska Teplá from Trenčianske Teplice along the Teplička River. After crossing the Teplička, the Čvirigovec educational trail runs along the embankment and adds a signposted walking experience to the selection.

Churches and Bell Towers

The Church of St. Matthew in Trenčianska Teplá is at the centre of the local cultural history. The Baroque church was built in 1733 on older foundations and has a Baroque-Classical high altar from the late 18th century. In Dobrá, the Roman Catholic Church of the Finding and Exaltation of the Cross, dating from 1900, stands on the site of an older Baroque church. The tower of the former church continues to serve as a bell tower; it contains a late Gothic bell dating from 1516. The bell tower is a masonry Classical building from the end of the 18th century with a pyramid roof. It stands on a hill in the northeastern part of the municipality, is in good condition and continues to serve its purpose.

Príles also preserves smaller but significant historical evidence. A bell tower probably dating from the period of the Counter-Reformation has survived there, with a bell dated 1660. Today, only a very small remnant of the former manor house remains. Of the chapel formerly located in the manor house, only walls with a Gothic window survive in a structural fragment. In Podhradište, visible rampart remains of a hillfort associated with the Púchov culture have been preserved on an elevated plateau. These places thus represent different historical layers: ecclesiastical architectural history, surviving individual parts of former complexes and an older fortified settlement form.

Tradition and Living Culture

The Teplanský costume is part of the regional identity. It is characterised by colourful embroidery on the sleeves and apron, featuring geometric and floral patterns as well as animal motifs such as the peacock, rooster and bird. The TEPLANKA folklore ensemble resumed its regular rehearsals in spring 2022 and continues to participate in a large part of the cultural events in Trenčianska Teplá. Its repertoire includes programmes based on local songs and customs, including “Teplanská svadba”, “Drápanie peria” and “Dožinky”.
