Chocholná-Velčice: Nature, Hiking and Local History
Accommodation in Chocholná-Velčice
Chocholná-Velčice can be explored through several specific themes: the nature of the Chocholnianska dolina, routes for hiking and cycling events, and traces of local history. When planning your trip, it is worth keeping these highlights distinct. The hiking event features a loop route with named hills and ridges; the cycling route is described by its length, road surface and elevation gain. Architectural history and local customs offer additional perspectives.
Landscape and nature
The Chocholnianska dolina is part of the Biele Karpaty Protected Landscape Area. Petrová Natural Monument, designated in 1993, lies in the valley. Partly preserved, species-rich orchid meadows can be found near Pálčí, below Tlstá hora and in other places. These meadows are therefore spread across several locations in the valley; Petrová, as a single natural monument, has its own protection designation.
The Chocholnica stream is another defining natural feature: it is one of the best-preserved streams in the region. Lynx are rarely seen in the Chocholnianska dolina. Taken together, these details offer different ways to explore nature—from the protection of a landscape and a natural monument to meadows, waterways and the rare presence of a wild animal. If you are particularly interested in habitats, the orchid meadows and the stream are specific places to start.
Hiking and cycling
The 28th edition of the Okolo Chocholanskej doliny hiking event was scheduled for 29 August 2026 in the Chocholnianska dolina. That date has passed; if you would like to include a later edition in your travel plans, please check its event date. The loop route planned for that edition was to start at the Chocholná-Velčice municipal office, pass Skalický vrch, Sokolí kameň, Machnáč, Kykula, Melčický vrch, Dúždniky and Tlstá hora, and return to the municipal office. The loop therefore connects numerous named points rather than ending at a single destination.
The Chocholná-Kykula uphill cycling race has reached its 24th edition. A 2026 route description gives the cycling race route as 11 km long, along a paved mountain road to Penzión Stará Škola on Kykula, with an elevation gain of 550 m. These offer different activity options: a mountain route with a stated distance and elevation gain for the cycling race, and a loop linking a series of named points for the hiking event.
Local history and customs
Chocholná-Velčice is home to a Neoclassical bell tower dating from the first half of the 19th century. The history of the area goes further back: in the territory of the formerly independent municipality of Chocholná-Velčice, there was already a settlement and a cremation burial ground of the Lusatian culture in the Late Bronze Age. These represent different historical periods—early settlement and a later building that defines the village’s architecture.
Festive traditions and food customs also contribute to the cultural picture. The Furmanská paráda has reached its 20th edition; its festive program includes a procession of horse-drawn teams. According to local customs, a wafer with honey was the first food served. Alongside architectural and settlement history, the focus is also on specific traditions reflected in a procession and a customary order of foods.
