Nitrianske Rudno: Reservoir, Rokoš and Regional Culture

Reservoir and educational trail as a starting point

The Nitrianske Rudno Reservoir combines summer recreation, nature observation and events in one place. The 1,330 m educational trail is intended for general visitors and runs along the existing boundary of the reservoir. Its information panels focus on bodies of water, the climate, the history of the municipality and the reservoir’s distinctive features. During the walk, you therefore gain not only impressions of the shoreline landscape but also an insight into the natural and local connections of the area.

The recreational area at the reservoir includes a public beach area and a campsite with additional facilities. During the summer months, the reservoir is used for recreation; during the fishing seasons, it is used for sport fishing. Swimming and water sports are also possible in summer. The lake is also a venue for events: cultural events, concerts and auto-motorcycle gatherings take place here. The range of activities by the water thus extends from peaceful experiences in nature to public events.

Rokoš: Protected Natural Area with Special Vegetation

The Rokoš National Nature Reserve lies within the cadastral territory of Nitrianske Rudno. The protected area has been under the highest, fifth level of nature protection since 1974. A botanical peculiarity makes Rokoš unique within the Western Carpathians: it is the only place in these mountains where Scots pine and downy oak grow together. As a result, montane and xerothermic, meaning warmth-loving, vegetation overlap there.

For hiking, three marked trails lead from Nitrianske Rudno to Košútova skala and Rokoš, Čierny vrch and Boškovie laz. Another hiking trail runs through beech, pine and oak forests as well as across meadows. Along the way, it showcases rock formations and opens up views of the Rudnianska Valley. This allows the landscape to be explored through different trail destinations and vegetation types, without limiting the area to the reservoir alone.

Cycling on the Rokošská radiála

Nitrianske Rudno is also connected to the Rokošská radiála for mountain biking. The route leads to the Nitrianske Rudno Reservoir and then continues through Nitrianske Rudno. The green-marked Rokošská radiála MTB route is numbered 5317, is 25.6 km long and runs over asphalt, paved paths and forest roads. The changing road surfaces are a specific feature of the route and distinguish it from a purely road-based route.

Church, Events and Regional Tradition

The Roman Catholic church in Nitrianske Rudno is part of the village’s history. It was built between 1804 and 1816 on the site of a wooden church destroyed by fire. The building has a single nave, a straight termination and no separate presbytery set off from the nave. It is therefore one of the few churches with a straight termination in the Horná Nitra region. The church grounds also contain a monument to Fraňa Madva, erected in 1925.

Numerous smaller and larger cultural events take place in Nitrianske Rudno every year. The diverse cultural and social events organized by the municipality include the Rudnianske Days. The regional musical tradition is also represented: a folk music group performs songs from Upper Nitra and focuses especially on the Rudnianska Valley, where all its members come from. The group has taken part in several folklore festivals and received the Samko Dudík Prize at the MFF Myjava in 2016. In this way, local culture complements the nature and leisure activities around the reservoir, hiking trails and Rokoš.
