Nová Bošáca: White Carpathians and Bošácko Culture

Nová Bošáca combines a mountain landscape near the border, scattered settlements, and the distinctive culture of the Bošácko Valley. The highest point in the municipality is Veľký Lopeník, a mountain reaching 912 metres. On the Moravian side, Nová Bošáca borders Březová, Lopeník, and Vyškovec; the municipality lies within the Biele Karpaty Protected Landscape Area. Choosing this destination therefore takes you into a landscape where experiencing nature and regional history exist closely side by side.

Landscape and Trails around Nová Bošáca

One distinctive feature of the locality is its character as a Kopanitsa municipality. The settlements are spread across the slopes of the Bošácko Valley, creating a different appearance from that of a compact town or a village with a continuous central area. Those who want to experience the landscape on foot can reach the Veľký Lopeník lookout tower from Nová Bošáca via a 5-kilometre blue-marked route. The specific trail is therefore clearly identified and leads to a viewpoint on the highest mountain in the municipality.

There is also a dedicated route option for travelling by bicycle: the 58-kilometre Novohorská cycle route runs via Nová Bošáca–Šiance to the border with the Czech Republic. The route and the marked trail to the lookout tower represent two different ways of getting to know the surroundings: a longer bike ride across several landscape sections and a shorter, blue-marked connection to Veľký Lopeník.

Protected Nature in the White Carpathian Region

Several natural monuments reveal the botanical diversity of the surroundings. Bestinné protects grassland communities containing several endangered plant species; the fourth level of protection applies there. The Blažejová Natural Monument preserves a valuable meadow community with rare and endangered plants, spring fens, adjacent orchid meadows, and hay meadows, also under the fourth level of protection.

The Grúň Natural Monument protects valuable meadow, forest, and pasture communities with a rich occurrence of orchids. Lopeníček is considered one of the richest sites for the endangered species common green-winged orchid (Orchis morio). The Mravcové Natural Monument, in turn, preserves a valuable calcareous spring refuge for orchid species and invertebrates. The fourth level of protection applies to Grúň, Lopeníček, and Mravcové in each case. These protected areas give the landscape a clearly recognisable natural-history dimension that extends beyond the mountain views.

Culture and History of the Bošácko Valley

The monument in the Grúň settlement is part of the local history. It consists of a statue and a mass grave of fallen Soviet soldiers, was unveiled in 1945, and is now a national cultural monument. Nová Bošáca is also home to the Roman Catholic Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius, a branch church. It was built between 1969 and 1971 and consecrated on 14 September 1971. The church serves as a spiritual centre for the faithful of the municipality and its surroundings and houses art-historically valuable works by the National Artist Vincent Hložník.

The traditional culture of the Bošácko Valley has been preserved particularly in oral folklore, family and seasonal customs, cuisine, and traditional dress. The festive women's clothing of the Sellácky tradition consists of four basic parts: “rubáč”, “rukávce”, “okolek” as the back apron, and “záscere” as the front apron. Festive men's clothing includes a shirt, “gate” or “gace”, trousers, the “prucel” waistcoat, and the “brúsek” hat.

Local craftsmanship is also part of this cultural image. The woodcarver Štefan Matejík represented Nová Bošáca through his 50 years of artistic work. In regional cuisine, the tradition of producing the famous Bošácka slivovica continues to this day. Traditional plum dishes were offered at the Slivkový festival; on 13 October 2018, the programme also included a tasting and judging of Slivovica.
