Discover Púchov

Púchov combines archaeological traces, historic buildings, vibrant craft traditions and various leisure activities. Anyone planning a trip to Púchov will find different ways to explore the city here: the Púchov culture dates from the 2nd century BC to the 2nd century AD, with its heyday in the 1st century AD. In addition, museums, churches, events and opportunities for exercise or family time make the city a multifaceted travel destination.

Cultural history in the Župný dom

The Župný dom is a central place for local history. Imrich Marczibányi had the Baroque-Classical building constructed at the end of the 18th century. Originally, it served as a salt warehouse and administrative building; today, it houses the Museum of Púchov Culture. The exhibition includes selected archaeological artefacts, including fibulae, a neck-ring form, parts of axes, spears, a javelin, a knife, as well as smaller tools and implements. The finds thus provide tangible support for the chronological classification of the Púchov culture.

Further historical points of reference can be found on Moravská ulica. The memorial parish church there was built in 1904 and was the place of activity of the Slovak poet and Protestant pastor Vladimír Roy from 1911 to 1925. Another memorial plaque commemorates Jan Amos Comenius’s stay in Púchov. The Protestant church is also located on Moravská ulica, a Neo-Gothic building dating from 1880 with a Renaissance altar from 1643.

Archaeology, blueprint printing and the “Pamäť lesa” educational trail

The history of the area is not limited to the city centre. Cultural periods from the Early Stone Age to Roman times have been identified at Púchovská skala. The historic Púchov blueprint workshop offers another way to explore the region’s traditions. It has been located in Púchov since 1898, after being moved there from Záriečie. The site was registered in 1988 as an immovable national cultural monument under number ÚZPF 10055/1. Modrý Dvor also organises craft days for making blueprint textiles.

The “Pamäť lesa” educational trail connects an information point with a lookout point, seating, a memorial stone and an information board. It was created to make the cultural and natural heritage more attractive to residents and visitors of the cross-border region. The educational trail thus complements the museum and historic stops with time spent outdoors, without requiring the individual elements to be combined into a single visitor experience.

Getting around Púchov and leisure activities

For journeys within Púchov and its districts, there is the Púchovský dráčik, a shared transport service. Booking is possible via mobile app or by telephone. The nine-seater vehicle picks up passengers at a selected physical or virtual stop. This form of local transport is therefore one of the specifically documented ways to get around the city and its districts.

The outdoor swimming pool in Púchov is available to the general public, the swimming club, holiday camps and sports training camps. Public facilities include a sunbathing lawn, a children’s playground, fitness equipment, snack stands and a children’s hut with a swing. For another type of active leisure, the skate park is open to the public. Its facilities include a quarter pipe, a bank ramp, a funbox with grind box and a ledge.

Events and local traditions

The events calendar is supplemented by recurring cultural events. Mikulášsky jarmok takes place on the first Saturday in December in Púchov’s pedestrian zone; its tradition began in 2004. The Folklórny Púchov festival has also been held regularly since 1982. Each dance and singing performance is preceded by a procession through the city in traditional dress. At Púchovský jarmok, visitors could enjoy traditional lokše, sausages, sweet specialities and burčiak.
