Záriečie lies northwest of the town of Púchov, where the Javorníky and White Carpathians meet. Several specific landmarks help put the village’s history into context: archaeological finds at Mestecká skala, the Evangelical church with its distinctive building history, and the Záriečanka folklore group. Landscape and culture are equally central here, with traces from different periods and a folkloric tradition that is still kept alive today.

Landscape and archaeological traces

Mestecká skala rises above the villages of Mestečko and Záriečie. Polished Bronze Age stone axes and a burial site were discovered in a crevice in the small castle. These archaeological finds give the landscape a historical dimension: alongside its location between two mountain ranges, it also bears traces of early human activity. Anyone interested in the connection between the natural landscape and the past will find a tangible local link to the Bronze Age here.

The Evangelical church and its building history

The Evangelical church in Záriečie is a Neoclassical hall church with a roof turret. A Protestant gallery runs around the interior on three sides. The church was built in 1786 as a Toleration church without a tower, on the site of a wooden church. It was remodelled and given a tower in 1859; 1856 is also cited in some accounts as the date of the remodelling. The dates therefore mark two important building phases: the original church without a tower and the later addition of the tower.

The gallery houses a single-manual organ with nine stops. It is thought to date from the beginning of the 20th century. Together, the hall church, surrounding gallery and organ offer a vivid picture of the architecture and furnishings of this church interior. The church thus brings together a specific building and a history extending from the late 18th century through the 19th-century alterations.

Folklore and historic crafts

The Záriečanka folklore group was founded in Záriečie in 1995. Its cultural profile includes folk costumes embroidered by the group members, three-part singing, traditional dances and folk music. The group performs in Záriečie, the Púchov Valley, throughout Slovakia and abroad. It also helps preserve and showcase the folkloric traditions of the Púchov Valley. Individual performances are tied to specific events, so check the current schedule if you would like to attend one.

A different perspective on local culture takes us back to the 18th century. At that time, residents worked in knife-making, operated a fulling mill, sewed slippers worn with folk costumes, and practised weaving, carpentry and tanning. Alongside folklore, these crafts represent a different period: one is about traditional work and production, the other about song, dance, music and costume.

Memorial sites and sporting culture

A monument to M. R. Štefánik, erected in 1935, stands near the Evangelical church. The birthplace of ethnographer and museum worker J. Geryk is also in Záriečie, marked by a commemorative plaque. The monument and plaque add two specific memorial sites in the village to its church and folklore history.

The local present also includes cycle trial, the predominant sport in Záriečie. The local cycle trial club has produced three world champions and other successful athletes. Alongside historic crafts and folklore, a strong sporting tradition is therefore another part of the village’s identity.
