Belusa between Cultural Heritage and Mountain Landscapes
Belusa lies in the northern part of the Ilava Basin at the transition to the White Carpathians, Javorníky and Strážov Mountains. The Slovak municipality therefore combines different travel experiences: historic religious buildings, regional traditions, forest trails and distinctive natural attractions. Located near a motorway and a railway line, Belusa also provides a clearly identifiable transport connection for travel to this part of Slovakia.
Churches, Chapels and Local History
Important buildings include the Chapel of Saint Fabian and Saint Sebastian. It is a national cultural monument and one of the oldest surviving buildings in Slovakia. The Chapel of Saint Anne in Beluša dates from the second half of the 13th century. The interior of the Parish Church of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary was designed in the Baroque style in the 18th century. The high altar features a painting by Jozef Božetech Klemens, created in 1879 as a replacement for an earlier image, and it continues to dominate the altar to this day.
The history of everyday life and craftsmanship is also visible. The renovated Izba ľudových tradícií on the first floor of the Beluša Cultural Centre on Farská Street has been open to the public by prior appointment since 28 June 2015. Belusa's basket-weaving school was the first school of its kind in Slovakia to take part in the 1900 World's Fair in Paris. The Jewish cemetery in Beluša contains 92 graves. The archaeological site of Hradište is considered the most valuable evidence of settlement in the municipality of Beluša.
Hiking between Valley, Forest and Rock
If you would like to combine experiences in nature with regional history, the Cesta básnikov hiking trail leads through the picturesque Slatinská Valley and the surrounding forests. Since 2022, the project initiated by OZ Art Belušské Slatiny has enhanced the area around Belušské Slatiny with interesting rest areas, mostly benches referring to personalities associated with the area. The area Belusske Slatiny offers opportunities for recreation, hiking and cycling all year round.
A distinctive natural attraction is Belušské vráta, a short rocky gorge carved by the Slatinský stream into the limestone bedrock of the so-called Manín Overthrust Complex. The gorge can be reached via an asphalt road leading from Belušské Slatiny towards the municipality of Mojtín. Rohatá skala, a tourist attraction, is also located in the Strážov Mountains. From the summit, views open to the Javorníky and the White Carpathians to the northwest and west.
Spiritual Sites and Regional Destinations
The rock sanctuary on Mount Butkov offers spiritual activities throughout the year as well as hiking opportunities on well-maintained grounds. In Studnička pod Lomom, the religious site includes a stone Lourdes grotto with statues of the Virgin Mary and Bernadette Soubirous. Thermal water emerges from a spring in front of the group of statues at the grotto in Belušské Slatiny.
For orientation in the wider regional area, destinations with their own trails are also part of the picture. Ostrá Malenica can be reached via a green-marked hiking trail from the municipalities of Slopná or Mojtín. Also located in the wider regional area is the 46-metre-long Mojtínska Cave, which contains a life-size statue of Saint Joseph. This makes it possible to compare different highlights in the surrounding area: historic sites in Beluša, forest and rocky landscapes, and spiritual and geologically distinctive destinations.
Belusa Throughout the Year
A local highlight is the Belušský jarmok, a fair held on the last Sunday in June.
