Discover Mojtín: Cave, Landscape and Trails

Mojtín combines protected landscape, a remarkable cave and several clearly distinct options for active days. The municipality lies in the Strážovské vrchy Protected Landscape Area. As a result, the focus is not on a single attraction, but on an environment where cycling routes, hiking trails, winter sports and traces of cultural history lie closely alongside one another.

Cave and Natural Monument

The Mojtínska priepastná jaskyňa is protected as a natural monument and lies within the cadastral area of the municipality of Mojtín. The cave is 503 metres long and 108 metres deep. Its historical character extends beyond its geological dimension: Mojtínska jaskyňa served as a natural church for five years, until the church school was consecrated in 1860. In 2005, the path to the cave was made accessible and renovated; a statue of Saint Joseph was also installed inside the cave.

The cave can be reached via a blue-marked trail towards Riedka, a signposted turn-off and then a short forest path.

Cycling and Hiking in the Protected Landscape Area

For cycling, Route 5313 Čelkova Lehota – Riedka – Mojtín offers a specific route option. The easy recreational MTB route is 14.9 kilometres long and has an elevation difference of 360/270 metres. The route uses asphalt, paved paths and forest tracks. It ends in Mojtín near the local church; most of it runs through the Strážovské vrchy Protected Landscape Area. Those who view the route as an approach to Mojtín thereby get a combination of a marked cycling tour, protected landscape and the village area.

There are also different options for walking. From Gombár, a district of Mojtín, a green-marked trail passes below the summit of Rakytník; a local path leads to a viewpoint. From Bufet Vŕšky, there is also an easy 1.6-kilometre ascent that takes approximately 45 minutes. Two swings are attached to the structure. Another green-marked hiking route leads to Ostrá Malenica mountain at 909 metres above sea level; according to the map, the round trip takes more than three hours.

Winter Activities and Local History

SKI Mojtín has downhill slopes for skiers of varying experience on the northern slopes of Javorina, Veľký Grúň and Malý Grúň. The ski resort also offers a groomed cross-country ski trail starting and ending at Bufet Vŕšky. There you will find refreshments, views of the surrounding natural landscape and a place to rest after skiing or hiking.

The village is home to the parish church of Saints Cyril and Methodius, built in 1863. A memorial plaque commemorates Ladislav Škultéty–Gábriš in Mojtín; above it is a bronze equestrian depiction. In this way, the local history complements the natural and active attractions with its own cultural focal point.
