Illau: Culture, Hiking and Cycling

Illau, known as Ilava in Slovak, combines impressive evidence of the town’s history with hiking and cycling experiences in the surrounding area. Anyone looking for a place for their trip to Slovakia that offers cultural attractions and specific opportunities for active days can choose between a museum, churches, historic sites and routes into the mountain landscape. When planning your accommodation, the main consideration is whether you want to focus on culture or use Illau as a starting point for a hike or cycling tour.

Town History at the Museum and Infocentrum

The Ilava Town Museum is a good place to start getting oriented. The historical exhibition on the ground floor is currently open to the public. It covers the town’s origins and history, the development of the castle from its early beginnings through the noble and monastic complex to the prison, as well as life in Illau. Other topics include guilds and crafts, the former brewery, the Jewish religious community, Gábor Baross and the château in Klobušice.

The Ilava Infocentrum serves as the entrance to the town museum and sells tourist maps, books and postcards, among other things. This visit can therefore serve both as a cultural introduction and as an opportunity to obtain maps of the region for planning your day. The first reliable mention of Ilavský hrad dates from 1446. A later historical layer can be seen at Ilavská zvonica: the building was extensively remodeled in the Baroque style in 1758, at which time it was given a second floor and a curved Baroque roof.

Churches, Crypt and Other Historic Traces

The Roman Catholic Church of All Saints was built from 1701 to 1718; its towers were completed in 1722. It is a single-nave Baroque hall church with a crypt and two corner towers. The crypt extends beneath the entire church. Some members of the Trinitarian Order, as well as some of the church’s founders and members of the local nobility, are buried there.

When visiting, you should take the current access situation into account: the church is currently accessible only through a single main entrance via a narrow path between the prison walls. The history of the monastery is also closely connected with this site. In 1856, it was converted, with comparatively minor modifications, into a nationwide prison for inmates serving sentences of more than ten years. In Klobušice, the crypt of Gábor Baross also commemorates a former Minister of Transport and Trade in the government of Austria-Hungary. The crypt was completed in 1895; until then, Baross had been buried in the crypt of the church in Illau. Illau is also home to one of the largest Jewish cemeteries in the central Považie region.

Hiking to Vápeč and Cycling in the Region

If you would like to combine your trip with a mountain hike, a marked hiking trail leads from Illau via Sokol and the settlement of Háj to Vápeč. The route starts at Illau railway station and reaches Vápeč at an elevation of 956 meters. Allow approximately four and a half hours for the entire route; the elevation gain is 706 meters. The trail alternates between forest and mountain meadows and offers continuous views. This information will help you assess whether the hike fits your daily schedule and personal fitness level.

Illau also offers cyclists a specific way to explore the region. An 11.6-kilometer section of the Vážska cyklomagistrála connects Nemšová, Dubnica nad Váhom and Košeca. Anyone using the cycling route from Illau can leave their car in a free overflow car park at the railway station and access the route directly from there. The Vážska cyklomagistrála provides cyclists with a safe connection to surrounding towns and offers another way to discover the region from Illau.

Market Tradition and the Annual Calendar

The local events calendar includes the regularly held Bartolomejský jarmok. The fair takes place at the end of August on the occasion of the Feast of Saint Bartholomew and combines craft stalls, traditional fairground specialties, regional products and a cultural program. Anyone traveling to Illau during this period can add a local event to their stay. The Ilavský beh is a 13-kilometer road race through the Porubská and Iliavská valleys in the Strážovské vrchy. The route has an elevation gain of 176 meters; the race has been organized since 1996.

As a quieter landscape feature, the weekend-house area lies in the Iliavčanská dolina valley on the outskirts of the town.
