Nové Mesto nad Váhom District: Castles, Nature and Trails

Nové Mesto nad Váhom District combines castles and museums with protected landscapes, bodies of water, and trails for cyclists and pedestrians. This gives you not one uniform holiday experience, but a selection of very different activities: historical sites, regional collections, viewpoints, easy trails, and seasonal activities on the water.

Culture among castles, museums and miniature landscapes

The Draškovič Manor House features interactive exhibitions on the history of Čachtice, Countess Alžbeta Báthoryová, Habaner ceramics, the history of the Roma, the Tatrín association, the noble families of Čachtice, and the furnishings of aristocratic residences. The Park of Miniatures in Podolie offers another form of cultural interpretation: The open-air exhibition displays more than 100 models of castles, chateaus, churches, cottages, observation towers, and birthplaces of notable personalities. The Podjavorinské Museum complements these topics with archaeology, history, ethnography, the history of craft guilds in Nové Mesto and the surrounding area, and the region’s ecclesiastical history. The castle ruins in [Beckov](Beckov) stand on a steep, 60-metre-high rock near the Váh River. The castle became a ruin after a fire in 1728. In [Stará Turá](Stará Turá), the “Tradičné bývanie” exhibition displays antique furniture, local folk costumes, historical religious books, and household objects from everyday life in the past. The railway museum there allows visitors to try a Morse telegraph and view old timetables. Religious buildings also tell the story of the region’s historical layers. The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Nové Mesto nad Váhom has late Romanesque origins dating from the mid-13th century. It was remodelled in the Gothic style as an octagonal building between 1414 and 1423; between 1667 and 1675, the Gothic nave was transformed into a Baroque three-nave church by inserting separating arcades. Tematín Castle is a highly visible romantic ruin on a ridge of the Považský Inovec and once served as an important signal castle. From there, views extend towards the Považský Inovec, the Danubian Lowland, the Little Carpathians, the Myjava Hills, and the White Carpathians.

Nature, water and trails

The Haluzická Gorge in Haluzice is a protected natural monument and also a technical structure created by the erosion of the Haluzický potok stream. It has been protected since 1963 and is now classified as protection level four. A forest educational trail was established through the gorge in 2012. The ruins of the church in Haluzice also form part of the area’s historic landscape: It is a Romanesque church from the 13th century with views over the Bošácka Valley. The Hájnica observation tower offers panoramic views over the Bošácka Valley, the White Carpathians, and the surrounding kopanitsy settlements. Zelená voda is a notable destination for water activities. The site is located 2 km from Nové Mesto nad Váhom and can be reached from the D1 motorway, as well as by car, bus, bicycle, inline skates, or on foot. Windsurfing is available at the recreational area. The Dubník recreational area consists of two reservoirs, Dubník I and Dubník II, also known as the new and old Dubník. The Dubník reservoir, particularly Dubník I, offers opportunities during the summer season for swimming, renting boats and pedal boats, playing tennis and table tennis, and fishing. The cycling route [Horná Streda](Horná Streda)–Nové Mesto nad Váhom connects the four municipalities of Horná Streda, [Brunovce](Brunovce), Potvorice, and [Považany](Považany) with Nové Mesto nad Váhom and is 13.4 km long. It is classified as a recreational cycling route, suitable for all age groups including children, and can also be used by inline skaters in addition to cyclists. The connection between [Beckov](Beckov) and the Vážska Cycling Route is designed as a separate path for cyclists and pedestrians and is also suitable for families with children and less experienced cyclists. The link to the Vážska Cycling Route opens up new cycling routes. At Štúrova skala near the Dubník reservoir in Stará Turá, a natural rock outcrop projects from a wooded slope. The site is described as a recreational area with an easy ascent and a training ground for climbers. Blue-marked trails lead to Tematín Castle from the recreational region below Bezovec in approximately 1 hour 30 minutes, and from Lúka in approximately 2 hours 15 minutes on foot. At Čachtické podzemie, the entrance is about a seven-minute walk from the village square; there is no parking available on the narrow dead-end road.

The Bošácka Valley and regional specialities

The Bošácka Valley Archaeopark provides insights into the lives of people from the last Ice Age, approximately 33,000 to 22,000 years ago. The site includes a human dwelling dating back approximately 3,500 years to the late Stone Age or Copper Age. Visitors can enter a typical reconstructed house and view a functioning pottery kiln. On selected weekends, the Archaeopark offers craft demonstrations, historical camps, and programmes for families with children. A culinary speciality is Bošácka slivovica, a traditional fruit brandy from Bošáca. The Freeride Bikepark [Kálnica](Kálnica) hosts the Bike Fest every year, including a World Cup event in slopestyle.
