Kálnica – Bike Park, Mountain Trails and Local History

Kálnica combines the mountain landscape of Považský Inovec with distinctive mountain biking opportunities, hiking trails and a multifaceted local history. The municipality lies in the northwestern part of the mountain range and includes the landscape subregions of Vysoký Inovec and Inovecké predhorie. Mountain Landscape between Inovec and Považie

The highest point in the Kálnica area is Ostrý vrch, also known as Vtáčí vŕštek. It reaches 910 metres and lies on the main ridge of Považský Inovec. In the Vysoký Inovec area, the mountain terrain is highly varied; the relative differences in elevation in Kálnica range from 311 to 640 metres. As a result, the landscape cannot be reduced to a single peak but instead displays different elevation levels within the municipality.

Ostrý vrch has a viewing terrace with carved information boards about the surrounding Považie region. Since 2011, the ascent to the Slovanský dvojkríž on Ostrý vrch has taken the form of a star-shaped hiking ascent. A blue-marked hiking trail is also important for orientation in the mountain area; it leads from Kálnica via Polámaný vrch to the ridge of Považský Inovec.

Hiking, Route 09 and Mountain Biking Experiences

One specific longer tour is Route 09 Kálnica–Panská Javorina–Ostrý vrch–Kálnica. It starts and ends in Kálnica, begins at the Piesky ski area at the edge of the village, and is 23.5 kilometres long. The route is rated as moderately difficult and takes approximately 6 hours and 30 minutes. Panská Javorina can be climbed from Kálnica in about 3.5 hours. The approximate times and the route rating give you a clearer idea of how a mountain tour differs from shorter trails in and around the village.

Kálnica also has a distinct profile for mountain biking. The Kálnica Bike Park offers 14 mountain biking disciplines. The park has a lit area for evening rides. There are also rides by arrangement with experienced instructors, a cycling school for children, a cycling school and bike camps. In summer, the Piesky centre serves as a hub for mountain bikers and has a lift and an obstacle course for downhill riding. In addition to Route 09, this provides opportunities specifically geared towards various forms of mountain biking.

Local History and Regional Culture

The ruins of the as-yet-unidentified Pod Hromovým monastery are located in the Kňažia valley. The more recent history of Kálnica includes the former church school and the Evangelical meeting house in Kálnica, which were consecrated on 22 September 1946. A bell tower was built in 1959–1960, and a community room was added in 1968.

An exhibition is dedicated to the history of the now-demolished Daranský Mill. Jozef Miloslav Hurban visited his godparents there. To mark the 600th anniversary, a permanent ethnographic exhibition was also established in Kálnica. These historic sites complement the mountain and biking attractions with insights into the village’s religious, craft and everyday heritage.

A freely accessible tourist shelter offers overnight accommodation. The log cabin has a small stove; there is a spring with drinking water nearby.
