Bzince Pod Javorinou

Landscape between the White Carpathians and Wetlands

The northern part of the cadastral area of Bzince pod Javorinou lies within the Biele Karpaty Protected Landscape Area. An important natural area is the Veľká Javorina Nature Reserve, which extends across Lubina and Bzince pod Javorinou. It covers 82.98 hectares and protects natural maple-beech forests in the highest elevations of this part of the White Carpathians.

Above Bzince pod Javorinou, near the settlement of Cetuna, lies the protected Cetuna Natural Monument. The 0.28-hectare small peat bog protects the region's largest population of Gymnadenia densiflora. The site of European importance SKUEV0367 Holubyho kopanice is also located in the northern part of the cadastral area. This natural area includes regularly mown meadows and wetlands with stable orchid populations. The natural destinations therefore differ not only in size but also in their habitats: forests, small peat bogs, meadows and wetlands stand side by side.

Hiking from Cetuna to Veľká Javorina

A marked hiking route begins in Cetuna, a district of Bzince pod Javorinou, and follows the blue-marked E8 long-distance hiking route to Veľká Javorina and back. The hiking route from Cetuna to Veľká Javorina and back is listed as 12 km, with 590 m of ascent and 590 m of descent; it is classified as moderately difficult.

Literature and Local History

In the center of Bzince pod Javorinou is the Pamätná izba Ľudmily Podjavorinskej in the writer's birthplace. The exhibition is largely dedicated to Ľudmila Podjavorinská and includes photographs, tapestries, books and an exhibition of puppet figures. Visits are possible year-round by telephone or email appointment. The visit therefore has a clearly defined framework: you can also plan to visit the memorial outside a seasonal opening period, but you must arrange the appointment in advance.

The older local history includes the Roman Catholic Church of Saint Michael the Archangel, which was already mentioned in the papal tithe registers from 1332 to 1337. In Hrušové, the bell tower is a national cultural monument with a unique clock featuring a 24-hour dial. This clock was installed in the 1990s. Archaeological investigations at the old cemetery in Hrušové also uncovered the walls of a single-nave Gothic church. It is provisionally dated to the 14th century and is considered evidence of medieval settlement in the Podjavorina region.

Traditions and Remembrance

The region's historical activities included agriculture, viticulture, livestock farming, the production of wooden utensils and embroidery. Traditional occupations also continued during the First Czechoslovak Republic. A more recent conflict-related memory concerns the settlement of Cetuna: on February 27, 1945, a battle took place there between partisans and Germans and a readiness unit of the Hlinka Guard. The commander Miloš Uhor, his deputy Anton Jakubík and 16 partisans were killed.
