Modrová – Nature, Cave and MTB Routes

Modrová combines a mineral spring, distinctive landscapes in the Považský Inovec mountains, remarkable sacred architecture and designated MTB routes.

Nature between the spring, rocks and cave

The Kyselka mineral spring is located in the Kalište recreational area in Modrová. The Kňaží vrch Nature Reserve forms a distinct landscape feature. There, thermophilous oak forests with downy oaks (Quercus pubescens) together with unvegetated rocks provide the conditions for xerothermic flora and fauna in the Považský Inovec. Carpathian species also occur on the northern slopes. The nature reserve is part of the Tematínske vrchy Site of European Importance.

The Modrovská Cave is also one of the characteristic natural features of the area. It contains pisolitic sinter formations with varied bush-like shapes that resemble underwater corals. At the same time, it is the largest cave in the Považský Inovec. Its entrance lies on the northwestern slope of the Grnica massif at an elevation of 523 m.

An important access rule for planning is that Modrovská Cave is closed to the general public. Visits are possible only when accompanied by members of the Inovec caving group. The cave therefore cannot be planned like a freely accessible excursion destination; it requires the appropriate accompaniment.

MTB routes through the Považský Inovec

Cyclists visiting Modrová can consider two specific details about the green MTB route 5213. It leads from Hubina via Gonove Lazy to Horáreň Modrová and runs mainly through woodland. At its end, it connects with the red route 020, “Naprieč Považským Inovcom,” which runs through the Považský Inovec.

This means that travel planning can take into account not only place names but also different route connections: route 5213 can be viewed through its course from Hubina to Horáreň Modrová, while its connection to red route 020 establishes a link to the larger cycling network in the Považský Inovec. When choosing your accommodation and planning your days, consider whether the focus of your trip should be on cycling, the landscape or the cultural details of the area.

Church of St. Michael the Archangel

The Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Modrová is a cultural and historical landmark. It is listed in the Central Register of the Slovak Monuments Fund under number 1253/0. Particularly notable is the presbytery, which stands on square foundations and has a barrel vault. A small sacristy is connected to the chancel by a flat Gothic trefoil portal. Other striking architectural details include a Romanesque and a Gothic narrow window, each only 10 to 15 cm wide.

These details give the church a distinct architectural identity. For travelers interested in culture, this offers a different way of experiencing Modrová than through nature: not only the landscape of the Považský Inovec, but also the building’s history and the surviving architectural forms shape the character of the area.
