Nová Lehota between Skiing, Nature and Village History

Skiing, Hiking and Cycling at Bezovec

The SKI Bezovec ski resort is located in Nová Lehota. It has four ski lifts and a total of 1.6 kilometres of ski runs. The SKI Bezovec area also offers evening skiing on 300 metres of illuminated slopes. This makes the destination interesting for trips where winter sports are not meant to be limited to the daytime.

Bezovec is also a starting point for further activities. A marked blue hiking trail to Tematín Castle leads from the Bezovec chalet area near Nová Lehota through meadows and forest. Those exploring the landscape by bicycle will encounter the Via Považský Inovec cycling route: it descends to Nová Lehota and then climbs to the saddle below Bezovec. The hiking trail and cycling route offer different ways of accessing the surroundings, without requiring the places to be experienced in the same way.

Protected Nature in the Považský Inovec Mountains

One of the distinctive natural features is Mokvavý prameň. The spring has been designated a protected natural monument in Nová Lehota since 1983. The area covers 20,989 m² and is subject to the fourth level of protection. Mokvavý prameň is also considered an easily accessible study site and a significant landscape-forming element.

The Dubový vŕšok nature reserve is also located in the cadastral area of Nová Lehota. It was designated in 1993 and is likewise subject to the fourth level of protection. It protects a valuable section of oligotrophic, meaning nutrient-poor, acidic-soil oak forest on the crystalline bedrock of the Považský Inovec Mountains. Typical indicator plants are among the documented features of this woodland. Dastínska kyselka, an alkaline mineral spring associated with the village, is also part of Nová Lehota’s natural character.

Church, Bell Tower and Village History

The Lutheran church of Nová Lehota is a single-nave Neo-Romanesque building dating from 1866. Next to the church stands a wooden bell tower with an open structure and a pyramidal roof. Another historic site is the Chapel of Saint Anthony of Padua, a single-nave building dating from 1903.

The history of the village dates back to the Middle Ages: Nová Lehota was first mentioned in written records in 1348 as part of the Tematín estate. On the village square, a marble war memorial commemorates eighteen people who fought and lost their lives in the two world wars. In the television series “Horná Dolná”, the village appears as Horná Dolná.
