Moravské Lieskové between Folk Culture and Landscape

Moravské Lieskové combines documented folk culture, historic churches and special natural habitats with educational and community activities. The village is therefore particularly interesting for a trip to Slovakia that focuses not just on a single building, but on the evolved connection between regional history, crafts, landscape and community life.

An important gateway to the local culture is the Museum of Folk Creativity. It displays folk clothing, traditional costumes, tools and written memorabilia. The women's traditional costume of Moravské Lieskové is particularly vivid: it developed from clothing originally made entirely of hemp and included the rubáč, kasánka, apron, sleeves, bonnet and boots. The local tradition of brass-band music has also been documented since 1908.

Churches and Historical Traces

The Protestant church was built in 1786 without a tower. Its organ was installed during the tenure of Pastor J. Lacka, while the tower was added in 1892. The Catholic church has an older architectural history: it was originally built in the Gothic style in the 15th century. The present Catholic church is Neo-Romanesque and was consecrated in 1912. Only part of the tower's surrounding wall remains from the original Catholic church.

The local cultural heritage also includes reconstructed folk-architecture buildings, the folk architecture of the Kopanitsche region and wooden water mills. An old historic building stands in the centre of the village; it was formerly a chair house. The Protestant church later purchased it and used it as a parsonage; this former use is explicitly part of the building's history. Another historical reference dates from August 1998: at that time, the municipality's 600th-anniversary celebration was two weeks away.

Landscape in the White Carpathians Area

Most of the area of Moravské Lieskové belongs to the CHKO Biele Karpaty protected landscape area. Above the settlement of Šance are flower-rich meadows where several orchid species occur. Large stands of the grass-leaved iris (Iris graminea) and the rare adder's-tongue fern (Ophioglossum vulgatum) also grow there. These specific plant occurrences give the landscape a distinctive natural-history character.

Education, Nature Garden and Local Food

ŽiTo v SÝPKE is an educational and community centre where nature, art and the exchange of knowledge come together. The ŽiTo nature garden offers fruit picking, a straw-bale maze and relaxation in a therapeutic garden. School classes and groups can take part in experiential programmes that combine nature-based activities with the acquisition of new skills.

ŽiTo v SÝPKE's school programmes include kneading dough together and baking bread snakes over a fire. The environmental education programmes take place both inside the centre and in the nature garden and orchard. The offerings therefore differ according to the learning location: the centre provides indoor spaces, while the garden and orchard directly incorporate the experience of nature.

TRH Sýpka brings together local food, the work of local producers and community encounters. Visitors can sample homemade specialities and exchange ideas with farmers, gardeners and craftspeople. In this way, the local food culture complements the historical and natural-history topics with a direct insight into regional production and crafts.
