Valaská Belá: Nature, Crafts and Winter Experiences

Valaská Belá offers a remarkable combination of mountain scenery, vibrant crafts and winter activities. Those looking for more than just accommodation for their trip to Slovakia, and also seeking a distinctive cultural and natural setting, will find several different options here: natural areas, traditional museums, regional folklore, hiking and cycling tours, as well as the Homôlka ski area.

Nature between protected areas and the source of the Nitrica

The Strážovské vrchy Protected Landscape Area was designated in 1989. Its landscape is characterized by forests interspersed with mountain meadows. The private Rysia Nature Reserve, located in the cadastral area of the municipality of Valaská Belá, also has a special protection status. It covers 30.49 hectares and is subject to the highest, fifth level of protection.

The Nitrica is known locally as Belanka and rises below Homôlka at an elevation of 900 metres above sea level. Valaská Belá offers good conditions for agrotourism as well as attractive hiking and cycling tours. This makes it possible to experience the surroundings from different perspectives, without limiting your stay to a single season or one particular theme.

Glassmaking, weaving and regional traditions

One notable cultural theme is handmade glassmaking. The element Ručná sklárska výroba has been included in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Slovakia. At the Sklený sen open-air glassmaking museum, visitors can watch glass being shaped and blown by hand using traditional techniques. The visit must be arranged in advance because the furnace needs to be heated before the glass processing can begin.

Another museum is dedicated to linen, weaving and embroidery. Visitors can weave fabric on traditional looms there. The exhibition also displays handmade dolls in various sizes, colourful carpets, as well as various tablecloths, doilies and placemats connected with folk traditions. A visit to this museum should preferably be arranged in advance.

Belianska embroidery is also one of the traditional craft themes. It was embroidered in three ways, all of which were also known in the surrounding area. The Belanka folklore group takes part every year in the summer and winter folklore festivals of Upper Nitra. Its traditional programmes include Carnival, the Carnival procession through the municipality, the erection of the maypole, Mother’s Day and Christmas performances.

Winter and historical orientation

Skiers can use the ski area at the Homôlka Ski Centre, which has three dedicated Tatrapoma lifts. Chata Homôlka offers accommodation and full-day catering.

A historical landmark is the Classicist Church of Saint Michael the Archangel. It was built in 1800 on the site of an older Renaissance religious building, which had already been mentioned in 1572; its tower was incorporated into the new structure. The church is in good condition and continues to serve its purpose. Thus, a historic religious building complements the themes of nature, crafts and winter that shape the character of Valaská Belá.
