Ráztočno – Hiking, Cycling Routes and Historic Traces

Ráztočno combines a distinctive location on the edge of the Žiar Mountains with hiking trails, cycling routes and historic details in the village. The municipality lies in the Handlová spur of the Upper Nitra Basin, at the southwestern foot of the Žiar Mountains and in the valley of the Handlovka stream. Here, references to the basin, the mountains and the valley landscape therefore come together directly. For your travel planning, the main highlights are specific routes, viewpoints, a publicly accessible cave and the history of the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary.

Landscape at the Southwestern Foot of the Žiar Mountains

You can reach the Hájska skala rock viewpoint via the blue-marked trail in the direction of Ráztočno. From there, you can enjoy views of the municipalities in the Handlová Valley. A publicly accessible cave of the same name is also located below Hájska skala. Both places bear the same name, but they serve different purposes for visitors: the rock viewpoint offers views across the valley landscape, while the cave is a separate natural destination below the rock formation.

Another viewpoint is Bralová skala. In favorable weather, the view from there extends to the town of Handlová, the Turiec Basin, the Malá Fatra, the Kremnica Mountains and Vtáčnik. From Remata near Ráztočno, a moderately difficult hike marked in red and yellow leads to this destination. The route is 1.6 km long and takes about 45 minutes. The stated distance and duration refer to this route from Remata to Bralová skala.

Hiking, Cycling and an Annual Race

A marked blue hiking route connects Ráztočno and Sklené over 9 km. It complements the shorter access route from Remata to Bralová skala with a separate connection between two villages.

Several named cycling connections are also documented in the cadastral territory of the municipality. The Bojnický cyklookruh and Rematská spojka cycling routes run through the area. The Bojnický cycling route passes through Ráztočno between Remata and Nedožery-Brezany. Ráztočno thus appears both as part of a connection between villages and as an area through which two named cycling routes run.

The Beh SNP race, with international participation, takes place every year in Ráztočno.

Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary and Sundials

The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary was originally built between 1280 and 1300 as an early Gothic church. Vertical sundials are located on its southern wall. Their dial is divided into full hours from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.; the sundials probably date from around 1667. A visit to Ráztočno therefore allows you to see medieval architectural history and a later historic timekeeping instrument on the same church building. The phrase “probably around 1667” refers to the traditional chronological classification and not to a confirmed exact year of origin.

Traveling by Train

Ráztočno is located on the Prievidza–Horná Štubňa railway line. Ráztočno and Remäta are the only two stops on this line where tickets are not sold. This specific difference is relevant when choosing your arrival point if you are planning a train journey along this route.
