Bystricany: Thermal Baths, Trails and Cultural Heritage

Bystricany combines Chalmová Thermal Bath with diverse trails, protected landscapes and historic buildings. If you would like to shape your trip around thermal waters, hiking, climbing and culture, you will find a variety of experiences here within a compact thematic area – from the Malý Lubín lookout tower to the summit of Vtáčnik.

Nature Reserves, Viewpoints and Climbing Routes

The Veľká skala National Nature Reserve lies within the cadastral area of Bystričany. It was established in 1984 over an area of 59.2 hectares and is subject to the fifth level of protection. Unstable andesite bedrock prevented extraction there, allowing the forest to preserve its original primeval character. A different view of the landscape opens up at the Malý Lubín viewpoint: a small lookout tower stands there, offering views over the Upper Nitra Lowland and the Vtáčnik and Tribeč mountain ranges.

For a more athletic option, there is the Hrádok climbing area with more than 80 routes of varying difficulty. It lies in the Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area and is also part of a Natura 2000 protected area. The marked surroundings can also be explored on longer trails. The Chalmová Forest Educational Trail leads from the car park near the thermal bath to the Malý Lubín viewpoint and passes a wooden chapel dedicated to Saint Hubert.

Hiking Trails with Different Focuses

The Bystričiansky Circuit is 17.5 kilometres long and can be completed on foot or by bicycle. It begins at the entrance to Chalmová Thermal Bath, leads along paved and field roads through Bystričany and its surroundings, and has six information panels. This distinguishes it from the blue-marked Route 2604, which leads from Bystričany through the Bystričianska Valley to Vtáčnik. This route is 14.2 kilometres long and has been named the Chodník Petra Školnu since 2003.

The summit of Vtáčnik can be reached from Bystričany via a blue-marked hiking trail. A stainless-steel cross stands at the summit; from there, views extend over the Upper Nitra Lowland and the surrounding mountain ranges. Every August, Bystričany organises an ascent of Vtáčnik, associated with commemorative events for the Slovak National Uprising.

Thermal Bath and Regional Experiences

Chalmová Thermal Bath has two outdoor pools: a swimming pool up to 25 metres long and a second outdoor pool with water attractions and a children’s paddling area. The spring water is considered moderately mineralised and has a temperature of 24 to 40 degrees Celsius. The facilities also include attractions for children and a volleyball court.

A distinct regional touch comes from Farma pod Vtáčnikom. Freshly milked milk is used to produce fresh and smoked sheep’s cheese, sheep’s bryndza, matured cheeses and cow’s-milk cheese strings. Visitors can also find draught beer and farm-produced cheese products there. A children’s playground, archery, various games and experiential events round off the visit.

Churches, a Castle and Local Traditions

In Chalmová, the Romanesque Church of Saint Anne stands on a hill behind the village, in the middle of a cemetery. It was built in the 12th century and expanded in 1730 with a larger, transversely arranged nave and an adjoining tower. A pilgrimage to this church takes place in Chalmová every year; after a long interruption, it was revived in 1990.

Chalmová Castle and its park are registered as a national cultural monument. Originally built in the Renaissance style, the castle was constructed in the first half of the 17th century, later remodelled and given a Neoclassical design, and expanded in the second third of the 19th century. The historic park includes valuable trees, an entrance avenue and a pond. After being closed for many years, the castle reopened to the public on 15 August 2026; the opening featured guided tours with commentary, historical photographs and exhibitions. In Bystričany, the Church of the Most Holy Trinity adds to the historic character: it began as a Neoclassical chapel in 1808, was remodelled in 1841 and expanded into a church in the second half of the 19th century. Bystričany Village Days are among the town’s traditional celebrations.
