Oslany: Buchlov Educational Trail, Rivers and Forest Landscape

Oslany lies at a distinctive transition point: the Upper Nitra Basin meets the Vtáčnik, Tribeč and Strážov Mountains. In addition, there are extensive forests, the Nitra River and the Slaný stream, which flows through the village. This creates a destination where landscape, a clearly described hiking trail and historical evidence stand closely side by side for you.

Landscape between basin and mountains

The forest landscape is particularly characteristic of Oslany. Forests cover more than half of the cadastral area and encompass 1,375 ha. The Oslany area is also partly included in the Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area. The Nitra River runs along the edge of the municipality from northeast to southwest. The Slaný stream flows through Oslany and joins the Nitra in the western part of the municipality.

The municipality includes both open connections to the river area and the forest-rich zones at the transition to the aforementioned mountain regions.

The Buchlov Educational Trail as a Specific Hiking Option

The Buchlov Educational Trail offers a clearly defined experience during a stay in Oslany. It is 5.3 km long, has an elevation difference of 400 m and takes approximately 3 to 4 hours. The trail is linear, can be walked independently and can be hiked in both directions. The described use refers to the summer.

The educational trail can be started in Osľany, Bystričany or Horná Ves. From there, it leads along the ridge through the Buchlov Nature Reserve to Žarnov. This distinguishes the route from a short walk through the village centre: its course is defined by the starting options, ridge trail, nature reserve and the summit area of Žarnov.

A Slovak double cross was erected on the summit of Žarnov in 2000. It is 6 m high and 4 m wide. As part of the described route, it forms a specific destination point along the trail. SAD connections in Osľany, Bystričany or Horná Ves are indicated for access to the educational trail.

Village Centre and Cultural Monuments

In addition to its landscape, Oslany has a discernible historical structure. The original village centre was architecturally a linear village situated along a stream. It later developed into a small town with a market square; a brewery was built there in the 18th century.

The Church of Kostol sv. Štefana kráľa stands on Námestie slobody in Oslany. It was rebuilt again from 1756 to 1768 and features a Baroque-like style. In front of the church stands the Immaculate Conception Marian Column from the second half of the 18th century. It is listed in the Register of Cultural Monuments in Slovakia.

This allows two different ways of experiencing the village to be combined during a stay: the educational trail leads over the ridge, through the nature reserve and to the summit, while the village centre reveals the development from a streamside village into a small town, as well as an ensemble consisting of the church and Marian column.
