Lehota pod Vtáčnikom: Vtáčnik, Nature and Mining History

At the western foothills of the Vtáčnik Mountains, Lehota pod Vtáčnikom combines protected landscapes, volcanic rock formations and visible traces of mining history. For your travel decision, this means that the village is less about a single attraction than about a diverse combination of nature, local history, culture and selected sports activities.

Vtáčnik and protected landscapes

The Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area extends into the cadastral territory of Lehota pod Vtáčnikom. The forests of Vtáčnik form an important gene pool locality for flora and fauna there, meaning an area of particular genetic importance for nature. The Vtáčnik National Nature Reserve also extends into the southern part of the cadastral territory.

In the southwest of the cadastral territory, particularly in the Malá Lehota district, lies a small part of the Sivý kameň Natural Monument. It protects an aesthetically distinctive rock formation in a volcanic mountain range, as well as protected plants. Visible historical traces include the remains of a medieval castle dating from the second half of the 13th century.

The Biely kameň Nature Reserve is also located in the forested areas in the eastern part of the municipality's cadastral territory. It protects a distinctive rocky summit with visible disintegration of lava-flow structures and rare rhyolite bodies in the volcanic complexes of the Vtáčnik Mountains. The area's natural features are therefore distinctly varied: in addition to forest landscapes, the surroundings also include volcanic rocks, rock formations and geological features.

Mining history and local memorial sites

The “Baňa Nováky” educational trail (1733469) runs through the cadastral territory of Lehota pod Vtáčnikom. It presents the 70-year history of coal mining in the Nováky area and at the Baňa Nováky mine. Another current memorial site is the “Barborka” mining train exhibit, which was ceremonially opened on June 10, 2026, and is intended to commemorate the region's rich mining history and traditions.

Older and prehistoric traces are also part of the village's history. Remains of mammoth bones approximately 90,000 to 50,000 years old were found around the Lazný stream. In addition, the Vtáčnik partisan command was formed in the foothill and Lehota mountains and became part of the Upper Nitra Partisan Brigade.

Church, climbing and local activities

The single-nave, modern Church of St. Cyril and St. Methodius was built in 1948. Its main altar features a painting of Saints Cyril and Methodius by E. Massányi from 1950. This specific religious site complements the natural and mining-history themes of the municipality's territory.

A tourism overview for the Prievidza region lists climbing opportunities in Lehota pod Vtáčnikom. The existing sports facilities on the grounds of the primary school also include an indoor swimming pool. Teams compete in the local guláš cooking competition; the winners are determined by a public vote. The event is announced as a recurring competition.

For seasonal planning, one restriction is important: a 800-metre-long ski lift is located in the cadastral territory of Lehota pod Vtáčnikom, but it is currently not operational. It should therefore not be planned as a currently usable winter sports facility.
