Veľká Čausa: History, Nature and Leisure

Veľká Čausa combines the landscape of the Upper Nitra Basin with a remarkably tangible local history and various leisure activities. The municipality lies in the southeastern part of the Upper Nitra Basin along the middle course of the Handlovka. Its town centre is located at an elevation of 312 metres, while the municipal area reaches elevations between 285 and 361 metres.

Local History and the Church of Saint Gorazd

Settlement in Veľká Čausa is believed to have begun in the 12th century; the village was first mentioned in writing in 1358. A deed of donation from 1430 lists the municipality under the historical name “Nagy Cheuche”.

The more recent religious history centres on the Church of Saint Gorazd. It is a filial church and was consecrated as a modern hall church on 30 May 1999. The foundation stone for its construction had already been blessed by Pope John Paul II in Vajnory on 22 April 1990. During the construction of the church, the chapel was extended for religious services; it was completely renovated in 2015. This religious memorial site is complemented by the restored war grave of Jozef Počuch, which commemorates a soldier who fell in the Slovak National Uprising.

Protected Linden Trees and Public Areas

A notable natural feature can be found in the cemetery: two large-leaved linden trees stand there, and were designated protected natural monuments in 1975. Their dimensions have been documented: the trunks have circumferences of 353 and 441 centimetres, and the trees reach heights of 25 and 24 metres respectively. The combination of their protected status and specific dimensions makes the two linden trees a clearly identifiable part of the local landscape, without assessing their significance beyond the designated protection category.

For visitors’ time in the municipality, sports facilities with workout equipment and children’s playgrounds have been built in the public areas. Veľká Čausa also has a small market square. These facilities complement the historical and natural points of interest with visible public areas within the municipality.

Leisure, Cycle Paths and Regional Cuisine

Local leisure activities include hiking, cycling, hunting, fishing and mushroom picking. Those focusing on cycling will find a starting point at the Koliba Pacho Resort, with cycle paths connecting to other officially signposted cycling routes. The same resort also has an 18-hole mini-golf course and an outdoor children’s playground. The facts therefore describe different forms of activity: cycle paths connect to an onward signposted network of routes, while mini-golf and the playground are mentioned as specific facilities at the resort.

Koliba Pacho also has a restaurant offering regional food and drinks. The cultural side of the municipality is represented by the Dúbravka folklore group: it has been active in Veľká Čausa since 1983 and performs at cultural and entertainment events both in Veľká Čausa and outside the municipality. Veľká Čausa is also considered a centre of the traditional craft of making Easter eggs. The local profile therefore extends from regional cuisine and leisure activities to vibrant handicraft and folklore traditions.
