Liešťany: Culture, Traditions and Trails

Liešťany combines a multifaceted local history with living traditions and trails through the surrounding area. The distinctive features lie less in a large concentration of monumental sights than in the history of the settlements, local traditions and the documented activities of community associations.

History of Liešťany and Its Districts

Liešťany was formed in 1943 through the merger of the independent settlements of Liešťany, Dobročná and Lomnica. The history of all three places has been documented in writing since the beginning of the 14th century. For the year 1332, the names Liešťany as “Lyssen” and Dobročná as “Dobrochna” are recorded. These historical names show that today’s municipality is based on older, independent settlement cores.

The area’s mining history is also part of its historical profile. After King Charles Robert confirmed mining rights in 1337, people began searching for and extracting precious metals in the Diviacka Valley. The local chapels from the 20th century are also among the cultural and historical features mentioned in Liešťany. Historical seals suggest that a parish church dedicated to Saint George once stood here. The cautious wording is important: this is an inference about a former place of worship derived from seals, not a statement about a church that exists today.

Folklore and Living Traditions

A significant cultural point of reference is the LIESKA folklore association. It originated from a performance in a chapel in Liešťany during a local church feast in 1989. Since then, LIESKA has regularly performed at local Mother’s Day celebrations and church feasts. The association also provides church singing at Christmas, Easter and local church feasts.

The local traditions also include the annual carnival programme “Pochovávanie basy”, a recurring folklore tradition in Liešťany. At weddings, LIESKA maintains the traditional custom of removing the bride’s wreath at night and placing the bonnet, known as Čepčenie. The Municipality Day, Deň obce, is also held as a traditional cultural event. Those who want to get to know Liešťany through its local identity will therefore find several different forms of community, church and festival culture.

Hiking, Protected Area and Cycling

Part of the Liešťany municipal area belongs to the Strážovské vrchy Special Protection Area for birds, SKCHVU 028, within the Natura 2000 network. To help visitors find their way around the area, a tourist map was installed in front of the Liešťany cultural centre on 3 October 2018. It is intended to assist visitors with hiking and orientation in the surrounding area.

The KST Liešťany continues the traditional star-shaped ascent of Suchý vrch on the first Sunday in May each year, with a raffle and music. Another documented association event is the traditional goulash cooking event on Chotej hora in September. These two dates combine activity in the landscape with a convivial local setting, without this implying a general programme of events for all travel periods.

There is also a clearly identified connection for cyclists: the blue-marked route 2308, the Bojnický cyklookruh, runs through Liešťany between Nevidzany and Kostolná Ves. The circuit can be started at any point and combined with other cycling routes in the district. The cycling route can therefore be viewed as an independent option alongside the local hiking and cultural themes.
