Prievidza: Culture, Landscapes and Cycling Routes
Prievidza presents sacred architecture, industrial history, museum collections and landscape experiences within a compact area. If you would like to combine culture and cycling on your trip to Slovakia, you will find several clearly distinct points of interest here: historic churches, the Rušňové depo, two themed tours, as well as cycling routes through paved paths, woodland and open countryside.
Sacred Architecture and Technical History
The Piarist Church of the Holy Trinity was consecrated on 19 August 1753. Its dual dedication is to the Holy Trinity and the Assumption of Mary. The church is also described as one of the finest Baroque buildings in Central Europe. The sanctuary at St. Bartholomew's Church was built at the end of the 14th century. Vertical sundials dating from 1662 are located on its south side. The Rušňové depo represents a different historical focus. It was declared a national cultural monument in 2005 and, with its preserved technical equipment, is considered the best-preserved building of its kind in Slovakia. In Prievidza, sacred architecture and preserved technological history therefore stand side by side as distinct sightseeing themes.Museum, Festivals and Local Traditions
The Hornonitrianske Museum manages more than a quarter of a million collection objects in nine specialist departments. Its holdings include extensive invertebrate collections as well as unique palaeontological finds of Tertiary flora and fauna. The collection themes thus range from natural history objects to traces of the Earth's distant geological past. Events also make the local culture visible. The annual Banícky jarmok begins with a mining procession and a mining hymn. The three-day festival also includes the Prievidzský rínok food festival. The Hornonitrianske Folklore Festival presents folk customs, traditions, songs and dances, traditional crafts and folk costumes.Routes Between the City, Landscapes and Hradisko
The Zlatá prievidzská cesta comprises two tours through Prievidza's preserved architectural monuments and sights, as well as the city's natural attractions and significant sites. For a shorter connection by bicycle, there is the 6 km cycling route between Prievidza and Bojnice. It can be ridden in both directions and runs along paved paths. In Skotňa Park, you can visit the lookout point on Mariánsky vršok and exercise at a workout playground. An easy cycling route starts at the entrance to the Lesopark in the Sever residential district. It leads through the forest along a field track and then along a forest path to the “Klčovňa” forestry station. There you can take your first break or continue cycling. Hradisko is located in the cadastral area of Prievidza, in the Hradec suburb: an andesite rock formation in the Vtáčnik Mountains and one of the most important archaeological sites in Upper Nitra. This site combines a distinctive geological feature with archaeological significance and complements the city's cultural monuments with a landscape and historical dimension. For further orientation, you can also view Cigeľ Cigeľ, Poruba Poruba, Liešťany Liešťany, Nitrica Nitrica, Klacno Klacno, Opatovce Nad Nitrou Opatovce Nad Nitrou, Šútovce Šútovce and Valaská Belá Valaská Belá.For the higher-level travel overview: Prievidza.
