Revúca District – Nature, Castles and Regional Culture

Revúca District showcases southern central Slovakia in an unusually diverse combination of karst landscapes, historic sites, active trails and regional cuisine. Muránska planina offers an extensive nature experience, while castle ruins, museums, churches and technical monuments tell the story of the area. When choosing travel accommodation, the desired focus is particularly important: nature trails and caves are available alongside cultural sites, cycling routes, water activities and local specialties.

Muránska planina: Caves, Gorges and Special Natural Sites

Muránska planina offers opportunities for hiking and ski touring on a year-round network of hiking trails with a total length of more than 310 km. The Bobačka Cave provides a striking contrast to the open trails. It is the most extensive cave system in the national park and has more than 5 km of underground spaces with rich sinter formations.

The publicly accessible Hrdzavá Valley leads to waterfalls or cascades and through an almost 600 m deep gorge lined with steep limestone cliffs. The Ľadová jama vertical cave is located near Studňa. Thanks to its climatic conditions, it retains ice at the bottom even in summer; an observation platform is located above the entrance. The Studňa educational site is accessible exclusively to pedestrians and, in winter with favorable snow conditions, also to cross-country skiers. No cycling path leads there – a clear distinction when planning different activities.

At Sysľovisko Biele vody near Muráň, visitors can observe a colony of European ground squirrels up close from spring to autumn and feed the ground squirrels by hand. The connection between nature and history is also visible: the Cigánka Nature Reserve preserves habitats for rare plants and animals around the historic castle site. The ruins of Muránsky hrad stand on Cigánka Rock within the national nature reserve of the same name.

Cycling Paths, a Riding Route and Water Activities

More than 150 km of cycling paths are designated in Muránska planina. The Huculská magistrála offers a different perspective on the landscape. It was created for visitors who want to explore the mountains and valleys of the Slovak Ore Mountains and Muránska planina from the back of a Hucul horse.

The 4 km-long Gemerská zelená cesta ecological educational route runs over embankments and technical structures of the unfinished Gemer railway between Revúca Square and the former spa area. It is suitable for pedestrians, cyclists, families with children and Nordic walkers. Kayaking is offered on the Muráň River on the section between Teplá Voda and the road bridge in Jelšava; several types of kayaks are available for this purpose. In Jelšava, an approximately 5.5 km-long mountain scooter descent is also documented, with an elevation difference of 550 m and a duration of approximately 20 minutes.

Castles, Museums and Cultural Waypoints

The first written mention of Muránsky hrad dates from 1271 and refers to it as “castum Mwran”. A nature trail to Muránsky hrad is 6.5 km long, moderately difficult, takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, and has an elevation gain of 530 m. For cultural travelers, the Rotunda of Saint Margaret of Antioch in Šivetice is also a special destination. With an interior diameter of 11 meters, it is the largest Romanesque rotunda of its kind in Slovakia and Central Europe. Its late Romanesque frescoes depict the life and martyrdom of Saint Margaret and are considered the oldest hagiographic story in Slovak visual art.

The Jelšava City Museum presents the history of the city as well as information about mining, bell founding and Gubárstvo. The Coburg Manor House is currently being reconstructed and can be visited by prior arrangement. The mining exhibition in Rákošská Baňa is also accessible by prior arrangement. The Chodník malých netopierov educational trail in Rákoš passes secured former mining facilities that serve as winter quarters for bat colonies; these can be observed in spring and autumn. The church in Rákoš contains a distinctive mural of the Holy Trinity, discovered in 1993.

The Museum of the First Slovak Grammar School is housed in a national cultural monument building that served as the Slovak Evangelical Grammar School from 1862 to 1874. The Gotická cesta is Slovakia’s first thematic cultural tourist route and, together with a section in Spiš, forms a 276 km-long circuit.

Regional Specialties and Historical Traces

Muránske buchty have been baked in Muráň since the 1970s and were produced again after an interruption. A trademark for Muránske buchty was registered in January 2018. At the Jelšava City Days, visitors can try Gemer dumplings; a cooking competition for this specialty has been held there for several years. In the 14th century, Jelšava was the second most important trading center and an important iron supplier in the Kingdom of Hungary.
