On the left bank of the Turiec, Višňové lies where the southern foothills of the Revúcka vrchovina meet the Juhoslovenská kotlina. A Reformed church dating from 1834 is a significant cultural and historical feature of the village. The landscape setting and the church give you two concrete points of reference for planning your trip: the village’s location in the south of the district and the church’s architectural history.

Landscape between riverbank, valley and basin

Višňové lies in the southern part of the district and in the Slovenský kras. On a smaller scale, the village occupies a terrace in the valley of the Západný Turiec and Drieňovský potok; it is also situated on the left bank of the Turiec. The transition from the southern foothills of the Revúcka vrchovina to the Juhoslovenská kotlina places Višňové between a mountain range and a basin. Several distinct landscape features come together here: a riverbank, valley areas and the transition between two named geographical regions.

The composition of the cadastral area is also described in specific terms: its predominantly hilly terrain consists of limestone and andesitic pyroclastics. Only the eastern part of the cadastral area is covered by oak forest. This distinction is important when describing the landscape: the reference to oak forest applies to the eastern part, not the entire area.

The Reformed Church and its architectural features

The Reformed Church is the municipality’s only cultural monument. This single-nave Neoclassical building dates from 1834, has a segmental end and features a projecting tower. Its distinguishing features include a wooden arcade and a Baroque cupola. The church’s basic design and the tower’s Baroque top offer distinct architectural details that help describe the building’s form.

The interior includes a Prussian vault and a wooden Protestant gallery. Its painted panels feature plant motifs. The church thus has notable interior features as well as its exterior design: the vault, the gallery and its decorated panels. For travellers interested in architectural and cultural history, it is a specific point of interest in Višňové.

Name forms and local history

Višňové has been documented since 1296 under various historical forms of its name: Wysnow (1296), Visnyo, Wisnyo and Wysnyo (1328), Wysnye (1487), Wissnowa (1773), and Višňové (1920). The sequence spans several centuries and shows how the spelling of the village’s name changed over time.

The village’s political history is also part of its story: Višňové was annexed to Hungary from 1938 to 1945. Historically, residents worked in livestock farming and haulage. These details add two further perspectives to the building’s history: the village’s political affiliation during a clearly defined period and the occupations of its residents in the past.
