Revúcka Lehota: Landscape, History and Local Traditions

Revúcka Lehota is located in the southeast of the Slovak Ore Mountains, on the left side of the Muránska Valley. The village combines a clearly defined landscape with a documented local history, an Evangelical church and Miková Reservoir, which lies within the cadastral area. If, for your trip to Slovakia, you are not looking solely for a natural or cultural destination but would like to consider both within the same local context, Revúcka Lehota offers several different points of interest for doing so.

Landscape between Upland and Reservoir

Most of the cadastral area of Revúcka Lehota lies on a terraced upland. In the north, this transitions into narrow strips of hilly terrain and lower mountain country. The surrounding forests consist predominantly of beech, supplemented by birch, oak and hornbeam. This creates a setting where open upland meets wooded transitions to lower-relief terrain.

Miková Reservoir is also located within the cadastral area and is used for recreation and fishing. An important distinction regarding its use is documented: the upper section of the reservoir, located by the inflow, is designated as a CHRO area; fishing is prohibited there year-round. Fishing is therefore mentioned for the reservoir, but does not apply to this specially designated upper section. This restriction is relevant when you want to understand the lake and its different areas.

Church, Settlement History and Crafts

The settlement was established around the 14th century under Wallachian law. Historically, the inhabitants of Revúcka Lehota were engaged in livestock farming. Traditional activities in the village also included the production of linen and cloth, charcoal burning, and the distillation of homemade fruit brandy.

The Evangelical church was completed and consecrated in 1793. It is the only cultural monument in Revúcka Lehota and features a Rococo altar with a pulpit dating from the second half of the 18th century. The village also has a memorial to the victims of the Second World War. Together with the settlement history, this creates a historical profile extending from the establishment of the village under Wallachian law and its church furnishings to the remembrance of the war victims.

Traditions and Documented Events

Hosting a table tennis tournament is a long-standing tradition; the 2023 edition was the 28th. Other events also illustrate the documented forms of local community life. On 13 May 2023, Revúcka Lehota commemorated the 78th anniversary of the end of the Second World War with a traditional bonfire at Dolinka. On 1 July 2023, a Children’s Day and a Sports Day were held at the local football pitch. The programme included games and competitions for children, as well as volleyball, shooting at goal, a rolling-pin throwing contest and tug-of-war for adults.

The Martinská zábava is considered an old tradition in Revúcka Lehota. On 11 November 2023, there was live music by the group Relax from Vlachovo, two dinners and a raffle. These events should be understood as historical examples, not as a current events calendar. Another historical trace leads to Podhorie, where a blast furnace stood in the 19th century.

A bus station is documented in Revúcka Lehota. Public transport also includes regional bus connections.
