Ratková: Late Gothic Church and Hilly Countryside
Accommodation in Ratková
Ratková lies in the southeastern part of the Slovak Ore Mountains, in the valley of the Západný Turiec. The village stretches across a floodplain and a terrace; on both sides of the watercourse, a hilly landscape characterized by oak forests shapes the municipal area. A floodplain and a terrace are different landforms in the valley; the wooded hills add another feature. If you would like to explore local history and landscape together on your trip to Slovakia, Ratková offers a specific place to start.
Late Gothic Church and Bell Tower
Since 1995, the historic center has been protected as a conservation zone. The Protestant church in Ratková was built between 1520 and 1540 in the Late Gothic style and is part of the Gothic Route. The presbytery features a Gothic net vault. In this type of vault, the ribs form a net-like pattern; the term thus refers to a specific detail of the interior architecture. A freestanding bell tower was built next to the church in 1786, combining Baroque and Neoclassical forms. The church and tower differ both in their construction dates and their architectural forms: the church dates from the 16th century, while the separately built tower dates from the late 18th century. To visit the church interior, you must contact the caretaker, Bohuš Palúša, in advance and arrange an appointment. So do not plan this as a spontaneous visit; make arrangements beforehand.
Neoclassical Buildings and Local History
The former Protestant school in Ratková is a Neoclassical building dating from 1818. Ratková's town hall is also Neoclassical and dates from 1827. The buildings were constructed nine years apart, making it possible to compare two buildings that are close in date but served different purposes: a former school and the town hall. Neoclassicism draws on forms from antiquity; in Ratková, the style can be seen in two buildings from the early 19th century. A monument to D. Bachát, erected in 1940, adds a distinct commemorative element to the built heritage. Historically, Ratková developed into a center for crafts and trade.
Cycling and Practical Information
The “Ratková–Ratkovská Suchá” cycling route starts in Ratková and follows the Rudohorská (012) long-distance cycle route along the state road toward Hnúšťa. The route along the road is an important consideration when planning your trip; check current road conditions before setting out. Parking is available in the square in Ratková. As parking arrangements can change, it is advisable to check the latest information before your visit.
For your travel plans, there are two different options: exploring local and architectural history, including a church interior visit that must be arranged in advance, or taking the cycling route, whose course along the state road should be taken into account when planning.
