Revúca: Cultural History and Routes to Muránska planina

Revúca combines Slovak educational history, literature and routes through the Gemer landscape. Educational History and Historic Sites

The Museum of the First Slovak Grammar School is housed in the building of the First Slovak Grammar School. It presents the history of the Slovak Evangelical Grammar School from 1862 to 1874. The First Slovak Grammar School in Revúca opened on 16 September 1862. This brings together the building, the museum and the period of education to which the exhibition refers in one place.

Another historic trace leads to the Evangelical parsonage. From the 1820s onwards, it became an important centre of the Slovak national revival movement in Gemer and Malohont. A memorial plaque on its façade commemorating Samuel Reuss and his sons as the first collectors of Slovak folk tales is a national cultural monument. Another memorial plaque commemorating Pavol Emanuel Dobšinský recalls his work there as an Evangelical priest, folklorist, editor, poet, translator, teacher and playwright.

Another historic site in the centre of Revúca is the Gothic church. It was built as early as the beginning of the 14th century. The presbytery contains a late Gothic stone sacrament house with a wrought-iron grille dating from the 15th century.

Literature, Stories and Interactive Experiences

The museum area is divided into four pavilions: they bring to life stories of the word, writing and images, as well as the journey to the stars. The visit is made particularly engaging by the opportunity to touch, try out and create the exhibits yourself.

The city's literary traces include the fairy-tale sculptures of Revúca. They stand in places connected with the city's history and depict scenes from literary works by the storytellers Gustáv Reuss and Pavol Dobšinský. The works have a direct connection to Revúca or the Gemer region. In another attraction, you can sit in the balloon basket of the airship Krutohlav. The Hviezdojed game takes place in various parts of Revúca. It operates online and starts at the tourist information centre in Revúca.

City Tours and Routes in the Surrounding Area

The museum offers long and short city tours of Revúca. Registration is required at least three days in advance. This requirement is particularly important if you would like to discover the town as part of a planned cultural route.

For a shorter route, the 4 km-long Gemerská zelená cesta is a good option. It begins at Revúca's square, leads past the railway station towards the former spa and runs over embankments and engineering structures of the unfinished Gemer railway line. The route is intended for pedestrians, cyclists, families with children and Nordic walkers. Its distinctive feature therefore lies not only in its distance, but also in the combination of the route and railway history.

Viewpoint and National Park

The lookout tower on Šturmanova hora offers views of Revúca, the peaks of the Slovak Ore Mountains and the entire Muráň Valley. One route to the lookout tower follows a 4.1 km-long surfaced forest road from Strelnica. Revúca is also a starting point for summer and winter tours in Muránska planina National Park. In addition to the historic sites, this means that viewpoints and tours in different seasons are available as independent travel options.
