Hucín between Karst Landscape and Local History

Hucín lies in the eastern part of the Slovak Karst on a terrace in the valley of the Muráň and Rybník streams. The village therefore combines a clearly defined landscape setting with several reminders of local history. The western part of the municipal territory contains a wooded floodplain, while the south is characterised by a limestone hill landscape. The valley, floodplain and limestone hills give the surroundings distinct landscape accents, without reducing Hucín to just one form of karst.

Municipal Museum, Manor House and Church

An important point of reference in the village’s history is the former distillery. It was converted into a municipal museum; the former distillery building also houses a permanent exhibition of historical clothing from the municipality and household appliances in the municipal community centre. The exhibition thus preserves both aspects of everyday life and part of the local culture of remembrance. The history of Hucín also includes pottery as a former occupation of its inhabitants.

The Hucín family manor house currently serves as a kindergarten and cultural centre. The municipality’s sights also include catacombs next to the manor house. The Reformed Church in Hucín dates from the first half of the 14th century. In the area of its bell tower there is a late Renaissance tombstone from 1681 bearing the coats of arms of the Giczei and Bessenyey families. The building in question stands in the centre of the municipality next to the main road. The villagescape includes the manor house, catacombs, former distillery building and the church with its tombstone.

Protected Trees in the Villagescape

Near the kindergarten stand two protected horse chestnut trees (Aesculus hippocastanum L.) and one protected American sycamore (Platanus occidentalis L.). The trees are listed in the Slovak register of protected trees and stand beside Hucín’s kindergarten. Their protection is justified on cultural and educational grounds; at the same time, it has scientific, landscape and aesthetic significance. This detail adds a natural connection to the architectural history, one directly linked to the public villagescape.

Cycling Route and Recurring Traditions

Hucín lies on the recommended cycling route through Southern Gemer. For a journey by bicycle, the village is therefore a named point along a regional route. Sports days are held regularly in Hucín during the summer. The tradition of St Nicholas celebrations has also been revived. On 15 March, Hucín hosts celebrations connected with the Hungarian Revolution of 1848. Alongside its historic buildings, these dates and customs give the village a lively cultural dimension, without implying a year-round programme of events.
