Polina Between History and Landscape

Polina is a Slovak locality where landscape and history come closely together. The locality lies in the valley of the Turiec stream and northwest of Tornaľa. The surrounding area includes hilly terrain and low mountain ranges, while historic buildings, a memorial column and a hiking route provide further specific points of reference.

Location and Landscape of Polina

Polina lies in the Juhoslovenská kotlina, a landscape with hilly terrain and low mountain ranges. The Turiec stream is directly connected with the location of the settlement, as Polina lies in its valley. In terms of road access, Polina is connected to the road network by a third-class road. This road connects the locality with Gemerská Ves. Thus, Polina brings together a valley on the Turiec, the landscape of the Juhoslovenská kotlina and a specific connection within the regional road network.

History and Historical Economic Activities

Polina was established through separation from Skerešovo at the beginning of the 14th century and was first mentioned in 1325. The history of the locality therefore dates back to a time when its settlement development was still closely connected with regional forms of economic activity.

Historical economic activities in Polina included agriculture, livestock farming, charcoal burning and carting. Agriculture and livestock farming involved the use of the land and the keeping of animals. Charcoal burning refers to the production of charcoal, while carting means transport by horse-drawn wagons. Together, these activities form a broad economic spectrum comprising agricultural work, animal husbandry, charcoal production and transport.

Mill, Memorial Column and Reformed Church

The listed historic sights of Polina include the building of an old mill from the 19th century. There is also a memorial column from 1996 in the cemetery. Both places are visible historical points of reference within the locality, but differ in their date of origin and function.

Polina is also home to a Neoclassical Reformed church built in 1883. The term Neoclassical refers to architecture oriented towards the forms of classical antiquity. The church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. Alongside the mill building and the memorial column, this sacred building is therefore a central feature—not only dating from the 19th century, but also preserved for religious use to this day.

Hiking Route Through Polina

Another connection between the landscape and a visit to the locality is provided by the hiking route “Potulky Gemerom: z Levárskych kúpeľov do Kamennej diery”. It passes through Polina and incorporates the locality into a longer hiking connection. Near Polina, there is a bridge used by the route instead of crossing the Turiec stream. On the section near Polina, the stream is therefore crossed at this bridge. The Turiec thus serves not only as a geographical point of reference for the locality but also as a specific element of the described hiking route.
