Jelšava – Castle History, Educational Trail and the Muráň
Accommodation in Jelšava
Jelšava combines an impressive history with clearly distinguishable activities: here you will encounter castle and palace architecture, the tradition of bellmaking, an educational trail with viewpoints and water sports on the Muráň River. This allows the town to be discovered both through its cultural heritage and through specific outdoor experiences.
Castles, Palace Architecture and Bellmaking History
Jelšava Castle lies within the cadastral territory of the town of Jelšava, 3 kilometres west of the town centre, on a spur of the Revúcka vrchovina hills. In the 14th and 15th centuries, it was the centre of the Jelšava estate. The original castle was probably built in the 1330s. Its layout included a dominant castle tower and a palace building on the opposite side of the site.
Another historical highlight is the Kaštieľ Coburgovcov manor house. The three-storey building was constructed in 1763 and added to an older Renaissance building from the beginning of the 17th century, on the site of a presumed Templar monastery. The building is considered a unique example of French Classicism in historic Gemer. Since 2015, the town of Jelšava has been carrying out stabilisation and restoration work on the Kaštieľ Coburgovcov and makes it accessible to the public during cultural events.
The local history of craftsmanship is also tangible. In the 19th century, Jelšava had up to 40 bellmaking workshops. The Jelšava Town Museum presents an exhibition about local bellmaking. St Peter and Paul’s Church also houses a Classical organ dating from 1865.
Tours and Orientation on Site
The Kaštieľ Coburgov Jelšava Information Centre offers guided tours of the palace and the town from Tuesday to Sunday between 10:00 and 16:00. These tours also include the Jelšava Museum and the Evangelical Church of Jelšava. This allows you to combine the history of the palace with urban sights and museum topics when planning your cultural itinerary, without treating the individual stops as separate excursion destinations.
Educational Trail, Viewpoint and Mountain Scooters
The mountain scooter route provides an active addition. It is approximately 6.5 kilometres long and has an elevation difference of more than 500 metres. The descent begins at a forest-road junction below Hotel Hrádok; there, staff brief participants and provide helmets. The ride usually ends at the beginning of 9. mája Street on the outskirts of the town. The mountain scooter descent is suitable for adults and children aged 12 and over.
The Hrádok educational trail was expanded in 2025 with a covered rest area and a dendrological information board. There is also a bicycle service station along the educational trail. The Dielková viewpoint offers views of the surrounding mountains and complements the educational trail with a distinctly scenic element.
Kayaking and Rafting on the Muráň
The Muráň River also offers its own opportunity to experience Jelšava actively. On the Teplá Voda–Jelšava section up to the road bridge, a recreational tour is possible in one- to four-person kayaks. Kayaks and equipment are provided for the trip; transport to the starting point and from the destination, a changing room and a hot shower are also available. Mestské služby Jelšava also provide logistical support for rafting on the Muráň River.
