Muráň – Castle, Educational Trail and Cigánka Nature Reserve

Muráň combines several clearly distinct experiences: Muráň Castle, situated above the village, the Muránsky hrad educational trail, and the landscape with the Cigánka rock formation and Veľká lúka. This makes the destination suitable for travellers who would like to compare culture, hiking and nature observation without mixing up their respective focal points.

Muráň Castle and its history

Muráň Castle was first mentioned in writing as “castrum Mvran” as early as 1271. Today, its ruins define the view of the castle complex: they are almost 360 metres long and 96 metres high. The castle is also situated above the village of Muráň and is the third-highest castle in Slovakia. Those who visit the site primarily because of its history will therefore find not just a single historic name, but a widely remarkable ruin complex with a clearly defined geographical location above the village. To visit the Múzeum Muráň, registration two days in advance at the municipal office in Muráň is required. This information is relevant to specific visit planning and distinguishes a museum visit from a spontaneous tour of the landscape or castle ruins.

The Muránsky hrad educational trail

The Muránsky hrad educational trail begins in Muráň; its first stop is next to the municipal office. It is 6.5 kilometres long and has a total elevation gain of 530 metres. At the same time, the educational trail is exclusively intended for pedestrians. If you would like to explore Muráň via this route, its length, elevation gain and the most important restriction on means of travel are therefore clearly stated. The route represents a separate form of visiting the area alongside the museum and views of the castle.

Cigánka: Rock Formation and Nature Reserve

The Cigánka rock formation rises above Muráň at 938 metres above sea level. Cigánka, including the castle grounds, was declared a national nature reserve in 1984. A special natural-history dimension is provided by the more than 330 species of lichen that grow on the castle walls, the rocks and the bark of trees in the nature reserve. A visit therefore focuses not only on the visible ruins and rock formations, but also on an unusually species-rich lichen world growing on different natural and built substrates.

Veľká lúka and the stud farm

Veľká lúka is the largest meadow on the karst plateau of Muránska planina. A stud farm built in 1950 stands at its northern end. At Veľká lúka, horses are kept year-round under natural conditions and graze freely in the meadows of Muránska planina. This landscape creates a different emphasis from the castle and educational trail: open meadows, the stud farm and the freely grazing horses make the plateau an independent destination among the experiences offered by Muráň. The Muránska strela tourist railway provides additional orientation. It connects the square in Muráň with Sysľovisko. Thus, in addition to the footpath, a clearly designated rail connection is also part of the local visitor landscape.
