Tornal'a: Discover Mineral Water, Parks and Culture
Accommodation in Tornal'a
Tornaľa combines an unusual natural formation with a mineral water bath, historic churches and a city park whose history dates back to the 13th century. If you are looking for a place with nature, bathing, architecture and regional cultural events for your trip to Slovakia, Tornaľa offers several clearly distinct points of interest.
Morské oko: Mineral Water Bath and Natural Formation
At the Morské oko open-air swimming pool, untreated mineral water is used directly from the Morské oko spring. It is suitable for bathing without chemical treatment and is intended in particular for intensive swimming and hydrokinetic therapy with a trainer. This involves therapeutic movement exercises in water. The open-air swimming pool covers an area of just under 2 hectares.
The character of the place also includes the Morské oko natural formation itself. The artesian groundwater outlet has formed a natural crater with a diameter of 60 metres. The term artesian refers to a groundwater outlet where water reaches the surface through natural pressure. It contains a 38-metre-deep flooded fissure. Cave divers from all over Central Europe meet at the natural formation.
Zoltánka Park and Churches from Several Periods
On the outskirts of Tornaľa lies Zoltánka city park, which serves as a place of recreation. Its history dates back to the 13th century. The park contains two plane trees estimated to be around 350 years old; a replica of a small castle also stands on a rocky promontory. The park thus combines a long local history with distinctive individual elements that can be considered independently of one another.
The churches also display different construction periods and styles. The Reformed Church in Tornaľa is a single-nave, originally Gothic building with a polygonal termination and an attached tower dating from the 15th century. In the district of Králik stands a Reformed Church that was originally Early Gothic and whose construction is dated to around 1300. The Roman Catholic Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a single-nave Neo-Gothic building from 1931. The Evangelical Church was built as a single-nave Functionalist building with a semicircular termination of the presbytery and an attached tower in 1932 and 1933.
Cultural Events Throughout the Year
Tornaľa's events calendar includes several recurring or scheduled events. Regularly held cultural events include the Days of Hungarian Culture in January. The Tornaľské kultúrne leto cultural summer event is held regularly from April to October. City markets are scheduled for April, October and December. The Day of Traditions is an international folklore festival scheduled for October. The Tornaľský pivný festival beer festival, also called Tornaljai sörfesztivált, is part of Tornaľa's events calendar and is scheduled for September.
