Discover Chyžné: Church Art, Hiking and Cycling

Chyžné combines impressive church art with designated hiking and cycling routes. The town is particularly interesting if, during a trip through Slovakia, you want not only to view historical testimonies but also to learn about their specific history. At the same time, there is a clearly designated circular hike and several mountain biking and cycling routes.

Church Art from the Middle Ages to the Modern Era

The Roman Catholic Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary is a national cultural monument dating from the second half of the 13th century. Medieval wall paintings from the second half of the 14th century have been preserved in the presbytery, the altar area. Particularly characteristic is the late Gothic winged altar from 1508, created in the workshop of Master Paul of Levoča. The opened wings depict the Visitation, the Nativity of Christ, the Adoration of the Magi and Saint George.

Admission to this church can be requested through the parish office in Jelšava. This identifies a specific possibility for visiting without presupposing general opening hours.

A second historical perspective is provided by the Evangelical church in Chyžné. It was completed and consecrated on 6 November 1786. Inside are an altar of the portico type dating from around 1800 and an altarpiece depicting the Transfiguration of Christ. There is also a painting of the Last Supper, which is considered the church’s most valuable painting.

Samo Tomášik and the History of the Town

The Samo Tomášik Memorial Room is also part of the cultural orientation. It opened on 5 September 1997 as a permanent exhibition of historical archival documents and objects, providing information about the history of Chyžné and the life and work of Samo Tomášik. The vicarage next to the Evangelical church was Samo Tomášik’s home and place of work. His grave and gravestone are located in the local cemetery in Chyžné.

The town’s mining and ironmaking past is also visible in place names such as Banský vŕšok, Hutné and Klinčiareň. This creates a townscape in which sacred art, personal remembrance and the historical world of work stand side by side.

Hiking and Cycling around Chyžné

If you would like to combine your stay with a designated hike, the Chyžné–Dlhý diel–Chyžné circular trail covers 17.2 km. It is marked in green and has a stated duration of 4 hours and 50 minutes.

For mountain biking, the Chyžné–Malý Kohút route starts in Chyžné. On this route, you reach a turnoff to the Klepaná skala rock viewpoint with a shelter and a cross. Another option is cycling route 5607, which connects the Ochtinská aragonitová jaskyňa, Jelšava and Chyžné over 13 km.

Chyžné is also listed for the period from 1 July to 29 August 2026 on the Jelšavský and Rimavský circuits of the Gotická cesta. This time-limited information places the town within this cultural route offering and does not replace a statement about year-round events or opening hours.
