Žilina District: Castles, Thermal Water and Malá Fatra

Žilina District combines the urban landscape of the Žilina Basin with thermal water, castles, traditional villages and the trails of Malá Fatra. For you, this creates a region with clearly different travel experiences: Žilina represents urban cultural heritage, Rajecké Teplice healing thermal water, Čičmany folk architecture and Malá Fatra marked hiking trails ranging from easy routes to more demanding sections.

Žilina and its cultural heritage

Žilina District lies in the Žilina Basin. Žilina itself is located in the Váh Valley and in the basin landscape at the confluence of the Váh, Kysuca and Rajčianka rivers. The city is also an important railway and motorway hub; Žilina–Dolný Hričov International Airport serves the region in northwestern Slovakia.

The city centre contains a heritage conservation area whose core is Mariánske námestie, with its typical burgher houses. Notable buildings include Rosenfeld Palace, an important Art Nouveau monument from the early 20th century reminiscent of Vienna’s Belvedere Palace, and the Neological Synagogue, which experts describe as a unique architectural monument. The Church of St Stephen the King in Dolné Rudiny is considered Žilina’s oldest monument; its oldest frescoes are almost 800 years old.

The Dom umenia Fatra is also part of the city’s history. The Art Nouveau building was formerly known as Grand Bio Univerzum. In 1921, it hosted the premiere of the first Slovak film, “Jánošík”. Another cultural focal point is Budatín Castle at the confluence of the Váh and Kysuca rivers. Its third floor houses the “History of Žilina” exhibition.

Castles, villages and traditional crafts

Strečno Castle is open to the public as a preserved medieval ruin and has been a national cultural monument since 1970. Fragments of the Renaissance reconstruction by František Thurzo dating from 1558 onwards are still preserved at Lietava Castle, including arched attics and remnants of sgraffito decoration. The castle has been abandoned since the mid-18th century and deteriorated over 250 years into a structurally endangered condition; at the same time, it is a national cultural monument. Its historical development is therefore an essential part of the site, without this implying anything about current visiting opportunities.

Čičmany is designated as a heritage conservation area. The folk architecture exhibition includes two wooden houses managed by the Považské múzeum: Radenov dom and Dom č. 42. Radenov dom presents stages of life, customs, work and occupational activities, diet, the architecture of Čičmany, as well as clothing and textiles. Another cultural tradition is wire craft – a craft and art form – which was added to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2019.

Thermal water and regional experiences

Rajecké Teplice offers a different focus. Rajecká thermal water is classified as natural healing water with a medium mineral content and as hydrogen carbonate, calcium and magnesium water. Spa Aphrodite uses the moderately mineralized thermal water for drinking treatments; its tradition there dates back historically to the 19th century. The Aphrodite Water World has indoor and outdoor pools using natural healing thermal water with calcium and magnesium ions.

The transport museum in Rajecké Teplice is part of the region’s event heritage. Every year, it participates in preparing the Rajecká Anča event with a historic motor train and other transport technology. The Rajecká Valley also includes several smaller protected areas and biocentres with rare vegetation.

Malá Fatra and Jánošíkove diery

Malá Fatra National Park is criss-crossed by numerous marked hiking trails. The range extends from easy walks and ridge hikes to more demanding routes with chains and ladders. Jánošíkove diery, shortly called Diery, are a system of gorges and canyons in Krivánska Malá Fatra within the Rozsutec National Nature Reserve.

The Jánošíkove diery educational trail through Dolné diery and Nové diery includes waterfalls, ladders and wooden footbridges and is also suitable for families with children. It begins in the Biely Potok district; parking is available in front of Hotel Diery.
