Rajecká Lesná – Pilgrimage, Culture and Winter Experiences
Rajecká Lesná combines pilgrimage, woodcarving and winter sports. If you would like to combine sacred history with an exhibition, a Calvary, winter sports facilities and a cycling route on your trip to Slovakia, you will find several different points of interest here.
A Pilgrimage Site with a Long History
The Basilica of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary was consecrated on 27 May 1866. The pilgrimage church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary was solemnly elevated to the status of a minor basilica on 7 September 2002. In addition to the basilica, remains of Gothic frescoes from the early 14th century have been preserved in the presbytery. They are now protected as historical monuments and complement the sacred character of the site with visible evidence of medieval art.
The religious character of the site also includes the Calvary in Rajecká Lesná, which is also called Frivald. It was built in 1920–1921 with financial contributions from local compatriots who lived and worked in America. A Lourdes chapel stands next to the Calvary, and a spring rises beside the chapel. Pilgrimages with the Stations of the Cross take place at the Calvary on the feasts of the Most Holy Trinity and the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, on Good Friday, and on the feast of Saints Cyril and Methodius. So-called Fatima Saturdays are observed from May to October, on the first Saturday of each month.
Slovenský Betlehem and Rajec Woodcarving
A distinct cultural highlight is Slovenský Betlehem in Rajecká Lesná. The display is 8.5 metres long, 2.5 metres wide and 3 metres high. In addition to the Nativity in Bethlehem and the life of Christ, the exhibition presents the history of the Slovak people. The building’s first floor also houses a gallery with woodcarvings by important Rajec carvers such as Brieštenský, Veselý and Bača. This means that the same destination focuses both on religious scenes and on the artisanal and historical representation of Slovakia.
Ski Park, Geyser and Cycling Route
Skipark Rajecká Lesná has artificial snowmaking, a snowboard park, snow tubing, an ice rink and a children’s park. The slopes are suitable for beginners and intermediate skiers; evening skiing is also available. The documented facilities therefore range from classic downhill runs to snow tubing and an ice rink, without all activities targeting the same audience.
Another distinctive attraction is the artificial geyser. It shoots water approximately 10 metres into the air and creates a colourful rainbow. An asphalt road leads directly from Rajecká Lesná to the geyser. For cyclists, the “Rajeckou dolinou na dvoch kolesách” route passes through Rajecká Lesná.
