Sillein (Žilina): Culture, Park and Paths along the Váh
Culture and Urban History in Sillein
Sillein, also known as Žilina, offers distinctive cultural sites, short city walking routes and a varied setting along the Váh. Particularly distinctive is the tradition of Slovak wire craft: As a craft and art form, it was added to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2019. In the Drotársky Pavilion, a permanent exhibition presents the history and material culture of this craft. This gives you a direct introduction to a Slovak cultural form that extends beyond individual buildings.
The historic heart of Žilina is Mariánské námestie. The square was declared an urban monument reserve in 1987 and is also a venue for various cultural events. Its arcaded walkways continue along Hodžova and Radničná streets. This means that the protected historic setting can be experienced not only on the square itself but also in the adjacent streets.
Another distinctive building is Rosenfeldov palác. The Art Nouveau building was constructed in 1907 and declared a national cultural monument in 2009. Its exterior can be viewed as part of a tour organized by TIK Žilina. If you are interested in urban history and architecture, this site offers a different perspective from the centrally located Mariánské námestie. The cultural spectrum is complemented by Bábkové divadlo v Žiline, regarded as Slovakia’s oldest professional puppet theatre.
Park, Water and Recreation
Budatínsky Park is a historic, freely accessible English landscape park. On site, there are opportunities for walking, summer picnics and selected sports activities. Its use is therefore not limited to sightseeing: Depending on how you plan your day, you can include the park as a green space for a quiet stay or for light activity.
For orientation around the water, there is Vodné dielo Žilina, which was built on the Váh River near Žilina. An asphalt path is available there for walking, cycling and inline skating. This specific path quality distinguishes the area from the short city walking routes in Žilina, which are not very demanding yet overcome differences in elevation between the squares. Hiking boots or special preparation are not required for the city walks.
Vodné dielo is also home to the Vodné dielo skatepark. It is open to every visitor, provided that the rules and operating regulations are observed. For your selection, this means that historic squares, culture and architecture are available in the urban area, while the park and waterfront areas offer additional forms of recreation. Another cultural stop is Budatín Castle, which is used as a museum and houses castle exhibitions.
