Zástranie – Straník, Trails and Culture

Zástranie is closely connected with Straník: the 769 m-high mountain lies in the Kysucká vrchovina, 6 km east of Žilina, and offers views from its summit of the Malá Fatra, the Žilina Valley and Kysuce. For planning your trip, several clearly distinct ways of accessing the area are central – a yellow-marked hiking trail, a local cycling route and a launch site for paragliding.

Hiking trail to Straník

The route from Zástranie to the Straník viewpoint leads uphill through forest switchbacks. Straník can be reached from Zástranie via a yellow-marked hiking trail. You should allow approximately 1.5 hours for the ascent; this time indication is explicitly only an approximate guide.

Cycling route 8458 through Zástranie

A second option is the yellow local cycling route 8458. It passes through Zástranie and then climbs to the summit of Straník; it also leads to the Straník viewpoint. The Teplička–Zástranie–Straník route is 5.4 km long and classified as an easy recreational MTB route. MTB stands for mountain bike; the route is therefore a cycling route and not another marked hiking access route. The documented forms of travel thus differ clearly: the hiking access describes the ascent via forest switchbacks, while the cycling route is designated as a separate, locally marked recreational MTB route.

Air sports at Straník

Today, Straník is an important centre for paragliding and hang gliding. The paragliding launch site is located approximately 1 km east of the village of Zástranie.

Shelter, footbridge and archaeological monument

A tourist shelter and a footbridge stand on Straník. Both were ceremonially opened on 9 April 2016 during the Žilinská 1000-ka event. In the same year, the tourist shelter and the footbridge received the CE.ZA.AR 2016 Architecture Award from the Slovak Chamber of Architects in the Outdoor Space category. These dates mark the construction and award history of the two structures, not their current use or availability.

The cultural background also includes the archaeological site of the Straník hillfort. It has been protected as a registered cultural monument since 30 December 1967. Finds from various areas of the hillfort include pieces from the Lusatian culture of the Early to Late Bronze Age as well as from the Early to Late Iron Age. These include finds from the Late La Tène period, which is referred to as the Púchov culture in northern Slovakia. In this context, the Púchov culture denotes the Late La Tène period in northern Slovakia and not an additional era alongside it. In addition to its landscape, the archaeological terminology gives Straník a historical dimension reaching far back in time.

Zástranie itself

The Church of the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary, consecrated in 2000, stands in Zástranie. The parish church is located in the village; the shelter, footbridge and hillfort, on the other hand, are located on Straník. It complements the connections to the mountain, trails, air sports and archaeology with a specific sacred site in the village.
