Sillein – Culture, Mountain Landscapes and Slovak Experiences

A trip to Sillein combines impressive mountain landscapes, vibrant folk culture and unusual experiences. The Žilina region is largely characterised by forested mountains. Historic settlements, open-air museums, gorges, thermal waters and places where Slovak handicraft and culinary traditions remain visible to this day lie between them.

Folk Culture Among Wooden Houses and an Open-Air Museum

One particularly distinctive cultural site is Vlkolínec, a remarkably well-preserved rural medieval settlement with wooden architecture typical of hilly and mountainous regions. In 1993, Vlkolínec was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Several signposted hiking and cycling routes lead to Vlkolínec from Ružomberok, Malinô Brdo, Hrabovo and Biely Potok. This makes it possible to combine a visit to the settlement with a route through the landscape, without reducing the site's cultural character to individual buildings.

Čičmany also showcases a distinctive form of Slovak folk architecture. The village has more than 130 houses whose exterior walls are decorated with white geometric patterns. Part of Čičmany was declared a folk architecture reserve in 1977. Folk traditions are still preserved there today. Those wishing to view regional building styles and living culture together will find a different experience here than in a museum-style open-air setting.

The Museum of the Slovak Village in Martin is Slovakia's largest ethnographic open-air exhibition and covers almost 150 structures across its 15.5-hectare grounds, some of which are furnished and open to visitors. Themed events showcase traditional production, crafts, customs and folklore. The museum also includes the reconstructed section of the former Kysucko-Orava Forest Railway from Kubátkovia Station to the Beskyd saddle. In Vychylovka, visitors can ride the forest railway, which has a unique reversing system.

Gorges, Hiking Trails and Cycling Routes

Jánošíkove Diery, also known as Diery, are a system of gorges and canyons in the Krivánska Malá Fatra. The gorges contain more than twenty waterfalls. Signposted hiking trails lead through this varied natural area via footbridges, ladders and chains. The specific route itself is therefore already part of the experience: rather than a straightforward viewpoint trail, visitors can expect a route that connects various structures and waterfalls.

For cycling, the second section of the Rajecká cycling route runs along paved roads and is suitable for road bikes. Rajecké Teplice is easily accessible from Žilina by bus and train and is known for its healing thermal waters.

Castles, Bees and Special Insights

Budatín Castle stands at the confluence of the Váh and Kysuca rivers in Žilina's Budatín district and is surrounded by a historic park. The castle houses an exhibition on the craft of wire binding, considered the only one of its kind in the world. The site thus combines a specific geographical location with a specialised craft theme.

Včelnica Mellifera offers interactive excursions for children about bees, beekeeping and ecology, including a hands-on visit to the beehives. Another special feature is the apiary: there, visitors can lie directly above beehives and breathe in the air from the hives. For families, this creates an opportunity to engage with nature through both observation and direct experience.

Regional Cuisine and Beer Culture

Slovak cuisine is also part of the region's identity. Koliba Lubenná serves traditional dishes such as bryndzové halušky and šúľance. Visitors can also buy homemade bread, posúchy, pagáče and buchty from its own bakery selection. In Martin, Pivovar Martins has its own beer tavern where visitors can sample the brewery's beers. The culinary range therefore extends from traditional dishes and baked goods to tasting locally brewed beer.
