Kysucké Nové Mesto District: History, Nature and Trails
Kysucké Nové Mesto District combines historical landmarks with protected landscapes and trails through the Kysucká vrchovina. If you would like to combine culture, hiking and a regional perspective on your trip to Slovakia, you will find a wide range of options here: from a Renaissance castle and archaeological traces to natural monuments, a marked ridge trail and winter sports in Horný Vadičov.
Radoľa Castle and the early history of Kysuce
Radoľa Castle is a Renaissance-style aristocratic residence and was probably originally protected by a fortification wall. The castle houses the permanent archaeological and historical exhibition “The Older History of Kysuce”. It has been open there since 1983 and was partially redesigned in 2002. The artefacts on display range from the Palaeolithic to the Roman period, providing a broad chronological insight into the history of the region. Radoľa’s historical focus can also be explored outside the castle. The educational and historical trail, opened in 2014, is approximately 4 km long and passes sites associated with the earliest settlement of the area. Signposts mark the route, while information panels explain the historical features of each stop. At Koscelisko, the foundations of a masonry church that existed approximately from 1270 to 1429 were uncovered. The Koscelisko terrace also shows that people were already living there 3,000 to 4,000 years ago.Historic centre and local traditions
The historic centre of Kysucké Nové Mesto is the only preserved historic complex in Kysuce. In the middle of the historic square lined with arcades stands a sandstone statue of Saint John of Nepomuk dating from 1761. The Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary also reflects a long construction history: it developed from a chapel begun in 1738, was extended from 1801 and completed in 1817. Local traditions include Jakubovské hody, whose history stretches from 1666 to the present day. At the Vianočné trhy, Christmas decorations, mistletoe and wafers are among the items sold; refreshments such as punch or mead are also available. These details distinguish a simple visit to historic buildings from an experience in which traditional local customs are also visible.Nature reserve, natural monuments and ridge trail
Ľadonhora is a protected nature reserve in Kysucké Nové Mesto District. The mountain reaches an elevation of 999 m and can be accessed via a marked ridge trail with viewpoints of Malá Fatra and the surrounding area. Other protected landscape features in the district include Ochodnický prameň and Veľké Ostré, each designated as a natural monument. For longer hikes, the route through the Kysucká vrchovina offers a particularly flexible way to plan the journey: it can be divided into several shorter sections, each of which can end in one of the adjacent valleys. This makes it possible to approach the hike section by section without having to plan the entire route as a single stretch.Astronomy and winter sports
Kysucká hvezdáreň teaches astronomy and related natural and technical sciences through various events for a broad audience. As a regional cultural institution, it is also professionally active in the field of astronomical observation. If you would like to plan your stay in winter, the Snowsun Vadičov ski centre in Horný Vadičov offers skiing and evening skiing. Its facilities also include a children’s park and a ski school; experienced instructors look after beginners as well as people who want to improve their skiing technique.Orientation and other local pages
